GH2 Anybody gonna use their GH2 to make a film for the youtube film festival?

I usually don't participate in online festivals etc.. but this being associated with Ridley Scott I kinda got excited. I think that it's the perfect excuse to make an actual short film and show off a little gh2 magic at the same time. In the last 5 hours, I wrote a pretty detailed outline and quite a decent amount of dialog for a short. So it looks like I might take it seriously. I think the gh2 is in need of some good representation, too many test videos/trailers etc. out there (of which I am very guilty), but very little substantial story telling with actual dialog.

I'm definitely going to commit to this, and thought I would post it on dvx so that people could call me out on it if I don't come through. Just a little motivation for myself

Good luck with that. :)

I'm sure you'll only have, say, 5,000,000 other submissions to compete with...

Well, I'm not going into it expecting to win anything, let alone have my submission taken seriously. Just want to go in, make a solid 15 minute short film and get it out there. It's just a good motivator is all, and helps with convincing others to pitch in some help : )

L1N3ARX,

I'm doing the same thing also. I've written a 16 page screenplay and have gotten all the parts cast amongst my friends. I'm hoping to get it all shot by the end of February so that I can really take my time with editing and scoring. As you said, I'm not expecting to win anything as I'm sure there will be tons of entries and the prize pretty much guarantees that there will be some heavy hitters out there. It really will be nice though, to do a "big" project from start to finish and hopefully show what the GH2 is capable of (remember I said hopefully....)

Good luck and keep us posted!

Tony

I'm participating as well, as long as I can get it completed before March 31st. But yeah, there should be a shi t load of submissions, plus since you are being judged by Internet guys, and not by a jury or anything, it should be really tough to stand out.

Plus, you can be sure that like it was said before, there will be heavy weights, probably guys with some nice budgets, and spectacular stuff.

Awesome, what I do get the sense of, watching Ridley describe the contest, is that he's looking for exceptional story telling. Someone young, that probably doesn't have a huge budget or access to a lot of resources, just someone who can deliver a really good story. As a pro, I think he sees past the BS and technical mojo that I'm sure a lot of people will be sporting. An amazing story along with really good dialog / acting will get noticed no matter what. I think they actually pick the top submissions according to them first, and then will let the youtube community decide from there in the voting process. So, since this isn't a bunch of 14yr olds deciding if we even get to see the light of day, it does sound promising actually.

I guarantee you that Ridley Scott won't have anything more to do with this contest then simply making a video appearance. Frankly, I'd be surprised if he even ends up watching the winning entry (which also will not be decided by him).

I strongly encourage anybody to get involved with anything that will motivate a creative endevour. In the end it's not about just winning (although that's great too) but it's about participation and sharing. That part becomes clearer as the process progresses.

So listen not to the usual naysayers and go have fun. If nothing else, there's this audience to show it to when all is said and done.

I disagree in a certain way. If your motivation is because there's a prize to be won, then I think you'll come out with something terrible. But if it's motivation to get off your ass and tell a story that you've been wanting to tell for a while, and if you actually put some work into it instead of just trying to put something out there to give you a shot at winning, then it's a good thing.

I think you only restated stoneinapond's original point... :undecided

It's slightly different because it sounded like he accepts the motivation to win something as properly motivating, even if you are just putting something out there to try to win something. If I am incorrect in that reading, my apologies.

Since your chances are incredibly slim, and you probably can't do anything else with the short outside of submitting it to that YouTube contest (one would have to read the rules to be sure), it's better to have a story you want to tell, other than having your sole reason for entering to win some moolah.

Try not to make it into something bigger than it is... it's a youtube festival man lol. It's just a fun motivator to get out there and have an excuse to make a short film and band up with like minded people.... Why would I be so worried about what my chances are or being able to submit it anywhere else aside from youtube?

In the real world is all about winning. Win or not. You put your heart into it. The movie world is no different. Be it for You Tube, Vimeo or your local camera club. Heard about the Oscars? Or the Emmys? Or the Grammys?.... That's what the big guys go for. Win or not.

This will be very hard to win. There are several users on youtube that have enormous followings. They make terrible nonsensical videos that a TON of people like to watch. If they decide to put any effort into this at all their horde of followers will definitely sway the vote if this is judged by internet users.

Some of these guys and girls have millions of followers. They can simply say "I will give away an xbox for every 1000 votes" and they will win hands down. The adsense money on their videos must be astounding.

That's really the purview of the producers and distributers. While most creators secretly (or not) hope that may be the case, I don't believe anyone sets out to make a film with that as a top priority.

Really? Writers, actors, directors, and every one of the 500 people involved in a major motion picture dream of an Oscar. That is reality. Of course that is for people at that level. The others dream and strive for a film festival award.

The winning film with either be a nonsensical documentary about a pet dying to get the tears flowing, or something by freddiew. I'm calling it now.
