Any way to test SDHC cards?

I'm getting a bit of a startle reading some of the threads about SDHC cards suddenly going bad in the middle of a live production(!)

I was wondering if there is any way to put an SDHC card through write/read processes and stressing the card to check and make sure that it is a good card and won't flake out. Kind of like how some programs benchmark hard drives and memory, maybe? Maybe this could help filter out the lemon SDHC cards instead of stressing out that your new cards might be bad ones.

We had an SDHC card failure here at work, and I have been tasked with testing all of our flash media. I chose this:

http://flashmemorytoolkit.com/

it does benchmarking and write tests to check for errors. It also recovered the files that were lost with our card.

It's like $40 though- hopefully someone knows of a free util that does this.

That came up in one of my searches... How do you like the software? Has it detected any defective cards?

The stories I have heard of failing memory cards revolved around the cards by "Transcend".

However, I am in search of more credible information.

All memory cards have a certain failure rate. Transcend is just the best reported brand. Check reviews at places like amazon and new egg, and you'll see this to be true for all SD cards with enough people using them.

My guess to why transcends seem high is that they have sold more cards than other brands due to value price so more reported errors. I have been using transcends in all my cameras and have yet to have any issues with them.
