any updates on the great 24p crusade?

So any body know how it's going? Is canon even paying attention? Or will they only release 24p if this nikon d3x totally blows it out of the water ( at the cost of it's high price).

What's with all the fuss about 24p on Canon's 5d anyway? It seems pretty simple to change the 30p to 24p in post on any of the basic editing applications.

I quite like that the 5D has the default look of 30p smooth video, gives more options.

of course, but it's not 24p per se that's important, it's the motion characteristics of 24p. 30p converted to whatever has still been exposed 30 times per second (unless you use motion compensation / optical flow but then we're not in the realm of "pretty simple" and "basic" anymore).

Ah, so it doesn't *seem* that simple at all then. I'm by all means not a technician at this so forgive me if I'm wrong.

I've always had to work with 25i or 25p footage as I'm in a pal country and it was never that different to make it 24p by just slowing things down or speeding things up slightly.

But you're right overall I've noticed that alot of things shot on digital and moved to 24p look really odd, I'm not sure if it's the colour latitude or the way the frame with rate or interlaced fields works. Like for example, the film 28 Days Later, as well as Once were treated to look like film and blowed up. But the motion looks too smooth. I'm not sure.

By slowing it down ? Or do you mean some kind of frame blending ?

What are these additional options ?

I just assumed, maybe wrongly, that things can be slowed down to 80% from 30p to 24p and look OK, although slow.

Skipping a whole 6 frames per second might look jerky. So what'd happen if Things slowed down to 90% and 3 frames were just removed?

I'm not sure about frame blending, is this what you guys mean when twixter is used?

I thought that by having more frames they'd be more options than taking frames out? I saw a report on how cinema should be double the frame rate, like 48p instead, and to the eye tracking shoots and pans would look so much better and they did. That and 3d stereo that James Cameron is so on about too.

it looks great, but very slow. removing frames will make it jerky. the only solution is interpolating frames, a very time consuming process to make it look right.

yes.. lee's method rocks.

not so many "time consuming process" if you'll render the master..
not before..
why do you really need in anything other than for delivery?
