Any Update on the Convergent Design Sunscreen Hood for the Odyssey

Yes, sorry we didn't get it done in May but there was a little problem with the original mold. I just approved the first pressing off the new mold today (yes, approved on a Saturday 'cause we wanna get it out to you ASAP) and the production run will begin next week. We'll show a few at CineGear next week and they will be shipping to our dealers in quantity the following week.

No worries with these trickling out. When it comes to plastiform molding, unit #1 takes forever, but units 2-1000 take no time at all.

Any images yet - I saw the prototype pic on the accessories page but would be good to see a number of pics from different angles.

US list price is $80.

First units are showing at CineGear at the end of this week, then we'll have a chance to take photos.

Mitch, is this a price change? I ask because I have had one on order at B&H Photo for over a month and they show the price at $90.00 + shipping. I felt $90.00 for a piece of plastic was a little much, but I need it, so I sucked it up and ordered it. I like $80.00 a little better (but not as much as I would like $50.00).

Thank you,

Long ago we had the price at $90 back before I came aboard and took over the project. Preorders may have ben taken at that price, but we'll talk to B&H.

Please note that Convergent Design does not sell direct, only to dealers. And US law forbids us from telling dealers the price they are allowed to sell these products. That's why you see "list price" or "manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP)".

I just took a look over at the B&H website and see that the hood is in fact listed for $80. You may wish to contact them about your order.

Thank you very much for the heads up. I just got off the phone with B&H and they adjusted the price on my pre-order down to $80.00 and also removed the shipping charge.

Thanks again,

Sorry, right after CineGear I was off to Broadcast Asia. I snapped these shots at CineGear. The shipping version has a more matte finish than these glossy units. We asked the mold maker to do a slight adjustment which will raise the bend structure rating on the "living hinges", which are thin zones of plastiform which allow the hood to fold flat. They're rated for several thousand 180 degree bend cycles, even though everyone will generally only bend them 90 degrees. I wanted to raise the bend cycles a little more to give clients confidence in the product. So this pushed the product back another week or two. I should know more the beginning of next week, but we are very close to shipping.

If anyone is around Singapore the next few days you can see the latest sample unit (matte finish) with me at the Expandore booth at Broadcast Asia. I'll snap a photo tomorrow.

Sorry for the delay. You would not believe how long it can take to get what one would think to be minor things just right.

Mitch,

I notice in the photos that the top panel seems to have a "bow" to it. My concern; is the material substantial enough that after a month or two, that the hood is going to still be flat along the edges of the monitor thereby keeping all of the light out? For and $80.00 piece of plastic, I would hope that it retains it's original shape for years.

Thank you,

Here's a couple of pics of the latest sample, matte finish. Note that there is no bow in this one. Some of the edges need improving and the living hinges will be thickened a bit but will still fold flat. They're rated for several thousand folds at minimum.

Mitch,

I like the matte finish much, much better. Are the 2 thumb screws captured in any way (such as an e-clip on the inside) to prevent loss?

Thank you,

Yes, they are captured by small ridges that hold the threads. Easy to remove them but they will stay on the hood in normal use. If you have a mounting solution for the Odyssey that uses the side sockets, simply remove the bolt and pass through the hole on the hood to attach the accessory. Works great.
