Hey guys!

Ive got my first music video shoot coming up this weekend!

Probably an expected amount of nerves vs. excitement for the day...but any tips?

its for a grungy/metal style band - so any suggestions on lighting and camera setup would be massivley appreciated!

I will be colouring with MOJO afterwards, so should I aim to light the scene in a certain way?

Much of doing a music video depends on whether you're recording the sound live or on playback. If you're recording the band singing live, and if you're doing multiple takes, it might be tough syncronizing the different takes (different camera angles) to the live soundtrack. If you shoot with multiple cameras at the same time you'll get around syncing problems.

Alternatively, bands will sing to a previously recorded track (playback) so multiple takes (with multiple camera angles) will match the audio track. Your HMC150 records at 48khz, so it's best to also have your playback recorded at 48khz. If your playback is through a previously recorded CD, there might be a little "drift" in syncronizing.

As for lighting, etc. That's a creative decision. Music videos are so varied in their "look" that even a poorly lit video might have some artistic value. Just experiment and have fun.

IF you're shooting digitally, you want to get as much information as possible. I try to shoot really neutrally, and then I can choose in post how I want to mess with it. I'm assuming you're playing a track while recording. You won't need sound per se, but you should still turn on the internal mic. This will make it worlds easier when you're syncing up the image in post.

If you have time, I would advise you to make a shot list. Also a good practice to keep, is to shoot some "coverage"— shooting the whole band playing the whole song, and/or individual members. This way, if something goes wrong with your planned shots, you can cut away to one of these filler shots.
