Any thoughts on this footage? Low-light dance

Hi,

Just got the HMC150, got some advice from here on what settings to use for low-light dance filming.

The footage can be downloaded from here (20mb .mp4)

The settings are:
720p 50fps
Default scene file except for:
detail level -3
detail coring +1
master ped -1
gamma - B.press
matrix - norm1

File was exported Premiere, haven't used Neat Video.

Any advice or thoughts greatly appreciated!

Thanks

The first thought is you need a tripod ;)

What other thoughts (or types of thoughts) were you looking for?

What? It was on a tripod? (joke)

I suppose I wanted to know if that is the best (image) quality I can get, I'm not saying I expect better I just want to be sure I'm not missing anything.

I also thought the video looked quite soft, but I originally thought this is because of the detail level and detail coring changes, is this right?

I'm a newcomer to professional video cameras so assume I don't know what I'm talking about.

Thanks

Looks muddy for some reason. What are your setting in your scene file? Also, have you been Black Balancing (ABB- press and hold the AWB button)?

I had an issue similar to this (but only in low light) that was fixed by doing a system reset. But this could easily be settings related.

Of course all of the above is relevant only if the above footage looks the same as the raw avchd files do. Can you post a sample MTS file?

Agreed on the raw clip. Anything exported makes it near impossible to properly judge quality.

Also, I might recommend a new camera light. Not LED. They tend to hot spot, and ideally you'll want fuller coverage.

I'll upload a raw clip tonight.

The settings are:
720p 50fps
Default scene file except for:
detail level -3
detail coring +1
master ped -1
gamma - B.press
matrix - norm1

No I did not Black Balance, will try that.

Yes, a tripod would be a first step. I think that the first part would be better if you would use a light in front of them, that would brighten everything up and give it more life!

And the second piece where everything is dark and you use some type of light from the front, try to put that light a bit more from the side and use an additional light from the other, so it gets a bit more even =).

You can get nice halogen lamps with a tripod for like 20 bucks in many stores, I use this type a lot: http://www.jula.se/mediaarchive/5189093/zoom/420083-jpg.jpg

Hey philkiel,

Lowering your frame rate will also let in more light. 50fps is darker than 25 (or 24). You can also set the shutter speed to 1/25th, which is different from the frame rate. Sorry if the euro settings confuse me.

Would love to know why you changed those particular settings.

As noted above, you can improve your image with lighting, angles, clean background, etc, much more than any camera setting. For instance, are you shooting at eye-level? bird's eye view? worms' eye view?

Here's some stuff I shot at 30F, Canon XH-A1, with a slight knee (black stretch), and whatever lighting the show designer had in their mind.

Right, very grateful for all the advice and feedback on the footage.

Got the HMC150 book and used the Lo-Noiz scene file supplied with it, have uploaded a sample video: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2009093/00001.MTS

I've took all your advice about tripods, lighting etc but I wanted to keep the variables the same so I could compare the 2 pieces of footage.

Thanks
