F55: Any reviews on the new Sony 4k prime lens set?

Been scouring the net seeing if there are any more reviews... but I can't find any - anyone found any other blogs/reviews etc?

What's the image circle - would they cover the Epic Dragon at 6K?

At $12,900 for a six lens set, this looks like an amazing deal. However, something doesn't seem right. I tried to handle these lenses at NAB this year, and after talking with Sony people for about an hour, I learned that they hadn't brought any with them. That doesn't seem quite right.

For the price they certainly seem to offer a tremendous value.

However, with the fire sale pricing they've introduced, they'll most likely be discontinued in the very near future. And I'd have significant concerns with likelihood of being able to get proper servicing/parts down the road - which is a concern for any lens set, but seems less likely to be an issue with Cooke, Zeiss, Canon or Schneider branded glass.

$13,000 is an incredible bargain for a 6-lens set of cine primes (even if they are big, heavy, and a little underwhelming performance wise), but it's still a LOT of money, and you'd want to feel safe that your investment in the glass with be serviceable for a long time to come.

Im trying to find some footage online with these lenses. Anyone have any links? All I see is people talking about them, no actual footage.

They look fine. No particularly amazing characteristics jump out but nice rendering etc. Whether they are worth the money for me would come down to the mechanics and how good they are.

Next year I'm hoping to grow into some cine glass. I'm on the fence between this 6 Sony lens set or go with two zooms the Tokina Cine 16-28 and 50-135. Both sets cover a similar focal range. Trading T2.0 primes for the convenience of zooms but T3.

Either way its a decision I wont need to make till I've saved the money to spare.

Frame Farm - I know it's off topic but fyi - I recently purchased the Tokina Cine 16-28. (also plan to grow into all cine glass eventually ). Love the look it provides and having all manual controls... but will warn you ...it's very big and now I'm likely getting longer rods and new Matte box as well. :lipsrseal

Oh awesome! I was going to ask if any of your recent work was shot on it. Those screenshots look really nice. The F35 is really impressive within your hands! :D

Underwhelming performance compared to what? Cooke S4 and S5 or Master Primes? Then definitely.

But compared to what the set is meant to compete with, CP.2s and Canon it's not underwhelming at all. Actually the Sony Cine Alta Primes have the CP.2s beaten in all but brand name recognition. I have now shot two jobs with the Sony lenses and they are great.

If the job has the budget I will shoot Cooke. But the Sony set is the best of the entry level to mid ground cinema glass out there. Unless we are talking the high ticket glass like S4, S5, Master Primes and the like the Sony will shine. I choose them over Ultra Primes as well.

I think they are the perfect personal lens set, specially for the price they are going for now. I see them actually picking up value and developing a follow as they go in a similar fashion as K35s.

The only reason I haven't bought a set yet is that I have access to one anytime I need. I also can get CP.2s from the same source and I always go with the Cine Alta primes.

Are there any rental houses online that rents them out? Want to do a comparison between these and my current lenses. Also, have access to the Canon CN-E primes so it would be interesting to see how they do against those.

Is there anyone that can speak to the comparison between the Sony primes and the Schneider FF series? The Schneider FFs would be more expensive, but are very compact and light. I handled them at NAB and was very impressed.

The CineAlta 6 set primes all match each other in every category, color, contrast, speed, size (except the 135). They don't fringe or breathe, minimal flare, rectilinear, built like tanks, tack sharp and priced right (while they last). About the only thing you can say about them is only 9 blade iris, they don't have the widest or longest ranges, you can only buy them as a set.
