Any recommendations for Headphone/Microphone Combo

I'm trying to find a good stereo headphone with microphone that is compatible with the DVX100A. I would like to use it to conduct interviews where I'm asking questions (but not on camera) to someone else (who is on camera and has a shotgun mic near them) and have the headphones on to monitor audio. I was looking at the Shure SM2, but not sure the impedance ratings for it are compatible. Anyone have any suggestions?

Brian- I think any mic or headphone would work for the DVX. The DVX can handle just about any mic/headphone out there. It depends on your budget. Any headphone will work. Just make sure its none of those really cheap dinky headphones you get with the cd player. Theres a lot of fourms about the different mics you can buy. I have a audio technica 815b ~300 bucks and it works farely well for me. I got a $40 headphone at bestbuy and also works well. hope any of this helps.

As far as headphones go, I discovered something on my most recent shoot. You really need to determine what your primary requirements are for your headphones. I have the AT MD40's, and our director has the AKG 271's. His headphones do a much better job of fitting over my ears and completely blocking wind noise over the headphones, but they do not pick up subtle background noise as well. I can hear airplanes, cars, and other background noise that he could not hear. When we played the audio back, it was definately recorded, so now he listens to me when I hold for background noise. ;-) The moral of this story is, you need to decide which is more important...I'm voting for a little wind noise in the headphones (not recorded) but greater sensitivity in the headphones themselves. Maybe someone else can suggest a headphone that bridges this gap better (anyone using the Sony 7506's?)

Sony 7506's baby... $100. Strong like bull.
They're industry standard for studio monitoring. Britney Spears uses them in the studio...heh heh heh...anyhow...they're so good and crisp, and they keep most sound out. I use them in the field and...in the field. Literally. When I want to listen to my ipod while I'm on the field tractor cutting grass (dude, I'm serious) they totally keep out the sound of the tractor engine without me having to blow the levels (and my eardrums) to Jesus's doorstep.

Also, beware of these headphones though...since most of us are used to crappy headphones, the levels may actually sound too loud when they are just right. On one job, they were so crisp and loud in the headphone that I swore that the hi's were too high that I attenuated my line and wound up with almost no sound. But once you know how sensitive they are, they're great.

---And the detail level they offer is crazy crisp. I can hear actors whispering about the director.

I'll second the Sony 7506s. More often now I'm using the Etymotic ER-6 for not much more.

If Britney Spears and I use the Sony MDR-7506, then it must be the best!

You are so right!! Hillary Duff may not be a great actress and singer--but I DONT CARE!!! She's hot as phuc!! Although I gotta ask, what's the deal her strange brother, or her dad from Revenge of the Nerds, anyway? I keep wondering when Booger is going to make a cameo.

Right. It's not really loudness, although the MDR7506 are pretty sensitive as compared to AKG 240/270. What's going on here is the MDR7506 have a boosted top end (about 6kHz) and they also have a bump at 60Hz.

Once you get your head around that, they are a great phone.

Re: Any recommendations for Headphone/Microphone C

Hi,

About the headphone/mic thing. I'd probably go with a set of Sony MDR7506 headphones with a Countryman E6 underneath. Put the E6 on first. Then the headphones.

The ear loop from the E6 will fit nicely under the headphones and you'll find the E6 also works nicely for other jobs you'll be doing.

If you have a wireless body transmitter, order the E6 with "the link." That will allow you to use the mic as hardwired or into your wireless.

The Link is a set of male/female plugs connected to each other in the wire just before the XLR power supply.

Just let Countryman or a dealer know which wireless you have so they can put the right plugs in the link.

Regards,

Ty Ford
