Any professional editors here?

When you are doing an initial assembly, do you select the takes or does the director? Specifically in the situation where the director is NOT with you during the assembly.

To generate clients, do you maintain any kind of relationship with an agent?

1) generally, the director had the good takes marked as such on set. you should have (or might want to ask for) the log of those so you can narrow your selection from the one's the director liked.

2) no agent. i just network for gigs.

FWIW, many directors want all the takes available for edit. In this case label the clips according to the shot log. Directors are as unique as snowflakes, emphasis on the flakes. Before you get too far into the project you should have a clear understanding of the directors post workflow.

As previously mentioned, there should hopefully be a list of "good" takes, but I would look over all the takes anyway as what look "good" on the set might not look good in the editing room.

I'd say most editors network for gigs (as Zak said) but if you get high enough on the food chain you'll want an agent.
