Any place selling with kit lens incl? If not, is there a better lens option?

I know that there are a number of places online that have the MKII in stock, but I haven't been able to find (a reputable) one selling the kit with the lens. Are people finding the kit in local B&M stores or is everybody forgeoing the kit lens and using other lenses?

I don't have any EOS/EF Canon lenses. If I were to buy just a MKII body now, is there one general purpos lens people would recommend instead of the $1000 24-105mm kit lens?

Thanks

If that lens has IS I cant imagine a better place to start after tommorrow

You can save cash with primes like 20 2.8 50 1.8 etc

Yeah, the kit lens is an "L" lens with IS. Places like B&H have the lens in stock for $1100, but if you get it with the kit it's only an extra $800, but almost everybody seems to have the kit setup marked as 'backordered' or 'call for availability'. Even though it's a "slow" f-4, I think it would work well for me, especially considering the MKII's low light capabilities.

Id buy any 5d in stock - they will dissapear on Jun 2

:) I may actually wait until the manual controls aren't updates and the 24p is hardwired in, but I hear what you're saying. :beer: The stock of MKII bodies has gone up and down over the last few months but the kit-versions have seemed to be fewer and further between throughout. I guess I'm just curious to know if MKII owners here have been picking up the kits or supplying their own lenses.

I have a 28-70 2.8 and a 50mm 1.4. They seem to be a pretty good combination. As a photographer's husband, I would recommend not getting anything with a minimum f-stop of 4, but that's just me. At our reception the other night, I was at 1.4 and like 1/30 second and still had a little grain. I would imagine it gets a little nutty when it doesn't have the 1.4 to play with.

Well, Canon claims their IS gives you an extra 3 stops, so you may have been able to take that same shot at F4 with a longer shutter speed. Of course, even if the IS is able to keep the camera stable, your subject may be moving.

That kit lens is not my favorite. My MII came with it and I had rented it before so I knew what it was like... distorted at the wide end and not the sharpest especially at the long end.

The thing is though, makes a great "standard" video lens like the one on the HVX or equivalent. You can get some DOF out of it but it won't do much for you in real low light but in bright light its ok.

I am mostly using the 35mm 1.4 and the 135mm 2.0 both have some sort of magic that the zooms do not but they are primes and a little weird to get used to for run and gun... I would probably use a zoom on the MII in that situation and then use some primes for B roll.

If you don't have any lenses I would recommend getting a lower end set of primes or get the 24-70mm 2.8 its a much better lens with a similar range but no IS.

Thanks for all the replies. As somebody with only manual control FD lenses, I'm starting from scratch here so I think the kit lens might still work for me as a starting place, but I'll look into the 24-70mm as well.

Thanks

you might want to start with an FD to EF adapter then (^_^)

FYI.. there are some great lens rental places on the internet. I use lensrentals.com several times a year. It's a great way to try out some glass to see what your next purchase should be.

Is Lensrentals.com reliable? Are their lenses in good shape? Also, do they ask for proof of insurability?

:) Yeah, but they all have cheap little pieces of glass in them in order to reach infinity. I'm going to order a $30 hong kong adapter, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Also, as much as I love my FD lenses, I know I'm going to want a lens with autofocus and all of that, which is actually one of the reasons I was hoping to find a kit for sale somewhere. That way I'd have all the auto control stuff (and IS) for running around with and then possibly use my FD primes for more cinematic endeavors.

@Super8
yeah, Lensrentals has great gear at an excellent price point. I have been using them for the last few years and have not had a single issue. In fact, I lost a lens hood at a press conference and they found one on eBay to replace it with no mark up. They offer insurance but it is not required.

@Texanite
Sounds like a good plan! Good luck with your endeavors!
