Any other options for importing cards besides ShotPut Pro?

I recently read about ShotPut Pro and was going to get it but didn't realize it cost 100 dollars. That's not an insane amount of money and it's definitely worth it if it's unquestionably the best program of it's type. That said, I'm wondering if there are any other options that don't cost 100?

Could you be more specific about what you want ShotPut Pro to do for you that you can't do with other programs you may already have?

What NLE are you using?

What problems do you have in your current workflow that you are hoping to solve with Shotput Pro?

I want to upload cards to my external hard drive. I don't have any problems right now. I've not had a corrupted upload. But I was reading Barry Green's book and he strongly recommended this program. My current workflow is to simply copy the entire card, dragging the "private" folder into an external hard drive and using that copy in FCP.

That's what just about every one does. Why did Barry recommend using this program to copy instead?

The thinking is that this program is best for ensuring no files get corrupted or the structure of the files gets corrupted in the transfer. That said, I've never had problems dragging folders but I'd hate to have it happen.

Why wouldn't you just use Disk Utility to make a perfect copy of each card, then mount them as needed? I've been doing that for a year, never had a problem with a single card image.

Does anyone here use the Panasonic AVCAM Viewer software to transfer from the SD card to the PC hard disk? I have been using this method and I can see that many of the files (extensions) are renamed and other meta data is changed/included.

Does anyone have views of the pros and cons of doing it this way?

I've recently started doing this because it's the only way for FCP to reconnect to Canon media after the initial ingest.

If you're looking to save some money, I know there are free file copy verification tools (teracopy comes to mind). I haven't used any extensively so can't really advise.

Not sure about others etc. But I use shot put pro on my field lap top to transfer p2 and whatever else.

What it does is verify the transfer and also does an instant back up to my portable HDD. I then have complete confidence to shoot with the card again. Sometimes I can be on the road for a week or longer shooting for a client, its just piece of mind knowing Ill get back without any corruptions and on two copies. Call it insurance.

Just don't expect Imagine Software or Shotput to honor any agreement they put in their EULA. The company has a poor track record for customer support.

File > New > Disk Image from <card name here>

I do that because sometimes Final Cut won't load the PRIVATE folder into Log & Transfer, even when I know for a fact the footage is all good (by viewing it in VLC).

Also, I like having disk images handy because they are easy for me to burn onto DVD's.

I use the acam viewer to back up my cards in the field before I give the card to my client. I use the write protect switch on the card before I insert in to the card reader. No problems.

I'm confused....

1. Right-click the PRIVATE folder
2. Select COPY
3. Right click your destination directory/location
4. Select PASTE

That's all there is to it. If you want to pay me $100 for this advice, I'll PM you my Paypal information.

If you want a little more control/information about the copying process, I'd recommend installing Teracopy and using that.

There's nothing more to this.

For a Windows user, I'd agree. For a Mac user, unfortunately, there does indeed seem to be more to it. Because we have many reports of files getting glitched during a straight copy. Which is why I highly recommend that anyone using the OSX platform, use a data-verifying copy program.
