Looking to see if anyone knows of any on-camera monitors that has a waveform for under a grand.

Long shot but just figured I'd see if anyone knew of any.

Side note is... really wish Sony would allow the addition of a built in waveform option. Even if it would be a pay firmware upgrade, I dont care. A professional camera like this not having the waveform built in, just kills me. There are cameras on the market at 1/8th the price that has built in waveform. Ugh.

It's not under a grand, but I'm currently using a new TVLogic, VFM-056WP which is seriously kick-ass. Kick ass. Except for the annoyingly reflective protective glass (removable, fyi) it's one of the best reference monitors I've ever used. I'm not saying it would replace a calibrated 17" panny, and I'm not quite sure I'd use it for that purpose... but for checking frame, focus, and other camera operator or 1st AC related tasks, it's quite terrific.

Ditto on TVLogic. Best thing I've seen in onboard monitor.

If Panny can put wfm on cameras, why not Sony?

I like that TVLogic, I never saw that until now, not such a bad price considering. How is it on eating batteries?

I've been on the hunt for an inexpensive monitor with scopes for about a year. To date I think the aformentioned TV Logic is the way to go. If you want to consider the SWIT monitor you want to go to their online store. Note the SWIT monitor is close to the same price as the TV Logic. The pixel dimensions on their 7" is 800 x 400. Below is the direct link...

For now I have setttled on a daylight viewable Marshall without scopes. My next monitor will either be the TV Logic or the 8.5" (Orchid) Marshall but it weighs just under 4 lbs but the screen is gorgeous and I like the simplicity of the Marshall menus which is the antithesis of the TV Logic which are deep and nerdy. Both are good choices though. The Marshall is under 3 grand but it is in a class that compares to the TransVideo which costs twice as much, with that being close to 6 grand.

I haven't seen the SWIT so I cannot comment on the color fidelity or off axis viewability, etc.

Apparently, the SmallHD monitor is supposed to receive a firmware upgrade which will include a scope package. I heard this a couple of months ago from someone who was in contact with someone at SmallHD. No further word on ETA or if it will be a free upgrade or not.

I really wish smallHD would finish the waveform upgrade that they talked about. It's really the ONLY thing I am missing.

I loved my SmallHD monitor and was impressed with the picture on the new ones, if it came out with a scope upgrade, i would be very interested in that. The Swit option doesn't seem to show any prices at all though.

Let me ping them again and see what the plan is. Now that I am using my FS100 more, I REALLY miss the waveform on the AF100. It's a great tool in helping you *know* your camera.

To be clear TV logic is about $500 more and the OP asked for under $1K. No doubt the TV Logic is a better monitor...
Every marshall monitor I ever tested against other brands was soft and the colors are off. Jut recently I tested their top of the line $3500 10.4" against a generic brand and still the same story. as you may guess I'm not a big Marshall fan. They do have great service and support but the picture quality is just not there.
The small HD always seems dark and yelowwish to me- but I believe that has to do with the panel-single channel 6 bit LVDS bus

Their new firmware (well the one before V2.0) was supposed to address the yellow issue. I have not verified if it has, but just wanted to put that out there for people worried. I also can say, that with the DP6, I could DEFINITELY see more into the blacks then I could on the AF100 screen. That said, I haven't compared it to any other LCD other than the DP1X which is not as nice of a screen as the DP6.

I am not a big fan of the Marshall monitor's either. I would prefer the Panasonic monitor monitor but the price really shoots up. It really is funny though, I hate the RED monitor but have to pay the price to get the needed histogram and menus and it's price makes the Marshall look cheap and the Marshall picture is far better.

Has anyone ever used the SWIT one? found it for just under 1K and seems to have the options i like, but the pixel resolution for an 8inch is kinda low for the price. for an 8'' I'd want something more than 800x480, at the least have 1024x640 or something... but the resolution seems quite low and unusable for me other than having it only for waveform functions, which them seems kinda expensive. I'd rather a smaller screen like a 5'' with 800x480. I'd rather use that. So I guess I'll have to spend 500 more for the TVLogic, or wait to see if the smallHD finally comes out with an option.

I don't get that really- bigger screen is always better- even with same resolution.. Easier to see. You can always back off a foot and you'll see exactly the same as on the 6 inch screen-and BTW it's the 7" I meant. It's just astounding to me every time I see somebody complaint that the screen is too big- there is no such thing IMO.
I don't work for any of these guys or get anything out of it to be clear.
