Any news on an update for the KiPro Mini?

An article a while back mentioned firmware to allow usind DxN instead of ProRes, but I've not seen anything on there site. Anyone have any contcts over there?

I need to avoid prores. The apple installer keeps disabling other codecs.

Also, it would be very helpful is AJA had rollover from one card to another. As it is long recordings can't really take full advantage of the second slot.

Anyone?

Yes we are all still waiting patiently for this already overdue update. The card switching would be nice although I think it is an issue with the cards themselves which are not manufactured by AJA. Seems to be allot of issues with this new technology involving most of the new digital recorders. For the AJA maybe recording on small 32Gig cards is best for now thus your not putting all of your eggs in one basket. I've gotten a bit hyper about checking to see if my Ki Pro mini is running when triggered by my F3 and checking takes numbers. Jon Thorn seems to monitor this site http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/aja-io-ki-pro/ you might try asking your question there.

Duke,
You can always feel free to contact AJA directly via phone or email if you have questions about the products.
We are currently in the QA process for the version 3.0 firmware; we hope to release that shortly.
Support for DNx encoding, in addition to ProRes encoding is in development; it is not part of the 3.0 firmware.
DNx support will arrive in a subsequent firmware release.
We understand the desire for rollover capability; we would like to offer this in the future.
Please note that rollover was not a promised feature of the device however.

Again, if you have any questions, feel free to contact AJA directly via phone or email.

Hope this is helpful,

How do you trigger recording to the mini via the F3? I have set both the mini and the F3 to trigger via time code but that does not work for me. Is there a setting to accomplish this? I thought I just read on this forum that this function is not working, either an issue with the Sony or the mini, I don't recall
Bill

Hi Bill, on the F3 in the time code menu I set the time code to Preset, Run to Record Run, TC settings are what ever you want. If you have free run or clock set the Ki Pro mini will not run when you press the record button on the F3 seeing as the time code is running continually. On the F3 in the Config menu toggle over to TC In and set it to SDI RP 188. When the time code starts rolling on the F3 it triggers the Ki Pro via the SDI cable. If you are rolling clock time or free run say on a two camera shoot with TC jam synced, you must remember to turn on the Ki Pro manually by pressing the record button on the Ki Pro. What the Ki Pro Mini does not do yet is start recording via the F3 record flag, hopefully down the line it will.

Hi Jon,

Thank for responding. I have received responses to technical support questions by email, but not ones like these. I just checked my spam folder to double check. Nada. Not trying to dis you and I know you don't like seeing it here, just saying.

I fully understand that roll over was never promised, but it is a feature that other recorders with two slots have. With roll over and hot swaps we'll be able to use the KPM for long form recordings. The fact that you tell me you're working on it means that I don't have to look at other products. I was beginning to miss my Nano 8 bits and all, but now I have hope.

The same with DNx. I hate, hate, hate all the problems Apple has caused with my edit bay. If I never see another Apple installer that grabs at codecs that don't concern it, it will be too soon. The fact that you are working on it and that other recorders have managed to incorporate it gives me hope.

I very much look forward to v3.0 to be release. Thank you very much for answering.

Duke

To prob. Steve gave the right answer. Run free won't work even though its a time code setting. Run to run record is the ticket.

Taking their time, hopefully so the firmware update is totally smooth. I like slow and steady to win the race.

Just to be clear, as with many companies, tasks, responsibilities and communication are divided amongst departments.
If you email or call AJA Technical Support and ask them about future features they will often not be able to
provide such information because that is not their primary task and they may not be able to answer accurately.
Additionally they are well trained in not talking about information they are not fully versed in; my guess is they
may have received your email and simply forgot to pass it along to the correct party - me - sorry if that is the case;
generally they do a great job with this, but mistakes in communication do happen from time to time. Conversely,
product managers are generally not your best or most timely resource for technical support; we spend the majority
of our time working on future product definitions, shepherding product features for existing products, assisting QA,
assisting marketing, assisting PR, traveling to meet customers, giving presentations and monitoring internet forums
like this one - just to name a few things we do. This is why your best bet for support is one of the dedicated men
or women we have standing by Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm PST.

Yes, I will answer as much as I can on internet forums, but because of my other responsibilities, my response time
can be a bit haphazard - also there are innumerable forums out there for me to try to watch!

I appreciate the requests that I learn about in person and via internet forums; product managers have to learn to be
humble enough to say, "I hadn't thought of that.." or "That's a good idea, we will see if that is something we can do..."

At AJA, such statements are not lip service; we put a great deal of effort into trying to build what you want and improve
what we already offer. The upcoming version 3.0 firmware has a lot of features that users requested and we acknowledge
that the release is later than the date we initially predicted; for that we are sorry. We feel it is better to apologize for being tardy and try to provide something that customers will be satisfied with. While version 3.0 will have many things users
want, it won't have everything that is desired I'm certain of that. For example, rollover is not part of version 3.0.

Again, we will do our best to help you. I'm sorry if you posed a question and it didn't make it back to me to answer.
I'll look into that tomorrow.

Hope this is helpful information,

Thanks for your response Jon, my apologies if I misread your responce but does this mean that the Avid DNxHD codec will not be part of the 3.0 firmware update, Thanks

Steve, your answer is in the second sentence from Jon:

"DNx support will arrive in a subsequent firmware release."

I like it that they are taking the time to do it right the first time. It would be horrendous to charge the client for the recorder and then have it produce macro blocking as happened with a certain recorder with a Japanese name.

Thanks Duke, I was afraid that what I read was true. Still I agree with you these new recorders have had their share of problems and AJA wants to get it right but the DNxHD codec was announced at IBC as part of the 3.0 firmware update. I'm editing on Avid MC6 and while AMA handles Pro Res along with many other codec's well I still trans-code the Ki Pro files to DNxHD, just trying to eliminate that process. I'll just have to wait it out. Thanks again Duke.

Sorry, just to be clear, the version 3.0 firmware update was not stated to include the Avid DNx encoding support; there may be confusion here because both version 3.0 and the future support for Avid DNx encoding were both announced at IBC, but they were always intended as separate firmware releases.

Also, for the sake of clarity, with Avid Media Composer 6, AMA provides support for Apple ProRes so you don't have to transcode; if you want to transcode, then that is a choice you can make. I can understand some of the reasons why that might be desirable of course, but it isn't a requirement.

Hope that helps clarify things a bit,
