hi everyone,

i can't find any news about new small HD cameras at NAB ?
Is there anything new from Panasonic, JVC, Canon or Sony ?

Re: any new HD camera at NAB ?

The quote below is from the supervideo website. (must be one of the worst websites ever, but he seems to always have a heads-up on upcoming stuff) www.supervideo.com (No mention of 24p however.)

"ANNOUNCEMENT.... Pana, JVC, Canon & Sony to have 3 CCD HD pro-SUMER Camcorders at NAB... Prices are all around $5,000 price point.

Sony, Canon, JVC and Pana have all developed a new HD PRO-sumer 3 CCD Camcorder.  Prices seem to hover around the five grand mark but a little birdie told me, once the competition all sorts this out and the cutting edge guys all buy up the first rounds, we are looking at early DV price points of 2 to 3 thousand US dollars.  I have images, specs... only exact roll-out dates seem like nailing Jello to a wall, as in later this year MAYBE !"

Re: any new HD camera at NAB ?

There were no new HD cameras at NAB.

Sony showed a mockup of something that might some day resemble a camera that they may introduce, but they were asking people what features they'd like to see in it, so it's way premature to call that a product introduction.

JVC announced plans to build a 3-CCD 2/3" professional ENG-style HDV camera, including 24P. But again, it was just a mockup, no model #, no time frame, no price (well, they said it'd be somewhere around $20,000).

The only HD camera that was "introduced" was from Sony, and it's HDCAM, not HDV, and it's $48,000.

So, to sum it up, no.

Oh, and Canon, thanks for not making me eat my words. ;D

How does this supervideo guy know so much? The site is dreadful, but he seems to know all the insider stuff. Now I'm wondering again if I want to buy a DVX100a now or wait...

Re: any new HD camera at NAB ?

While HD is desireable, the DVX will currently turn out very nice DVD quality that can be cut on your computer without jumping through a bunch of money & technical hoops. In short, you can start making movies instead of waiting & talking about making movies. I love the best gear, but I like doing rather than waiting.

In order to find the right camera we need to figure out what our end product is. VHS, DVD, WEB, TV, 35mm film. etc...

For DVD production, the DVX works great. This would also include VHS, WEB, & TV.

A 35mm film-out from a DVX , or for that matter, any well shot DV material can look Great! I've gone to the film labs and watched the 35mm video to film transfers in the dailies theatre. Most look as good as most any major film in your neighborhood theatre. The transfer to film gives it the "FILM LOOK." But for the most part it's a GIGO situation, garbage in, garbage out. The look comes down to cinematography and set production values. You might refer to the American Cinematographer issue of last year (month?) for a review of the camera compared to 16mm & 35mm Arri cameras all tranfered to 35 stock. Basically, they were shocked at how good it did. That was the DVX100, not the 100A, which is even better.

I think the DVX turns out good quality images for the film-maker that wants to learn the craft of cinematic story telling.

So is it worth waiting for something better? Well, maybe... but then you might want to wait for the next one that's even better, and then the next one after that... you get the idea. :D :)

Re: any new HD camera at NAB ?

well,

the new AG-DVX100A is a winner for sure.
The images are really beautifull.
I bought one.

I would not wait for a new camera.
It seems that we'll have to wait at least one more year to see something HD that really works.

Re: any new HD camera at NAB ?

it's not really a dvx news.. so i didn't want to start a new thread, but check this "Kinetta" camera http://www.kinetta.com --> dont miss the brochure :)
i like their spirit...

Re: any new HD camera at NAB ?

Panasonic did in fact have a new HDV 3 chiper on display at NAb... it looked a little funny and didnt work, but they at least showed it. It also ran on Hard Disk cards, so no more tape.

Re: any new HD camera at NAB ?

No, it wasn't HDV, it was mini-HD and stored data on P2 memory cards. HDV is a specific variant of HD, and Panasonic is not on the HDV bandwagon (yet).

It can record DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV data onto P2 cards. Check out the latest from Panasonic:
