Can anyone think of a way to burn in some numbers like a timecode burn on the image? I want to add a stopwatch readout or radar gun speed time to the image without adding it in post.
 
without post ? if you want to use the camera timecode display, record the camera image in a external recorder through s-video output (turn on the menu option to show data). But post should be easier and better :)

I was thinking about mounting a small led display to the lower right front of the lens on a rail or something. I'm trying to cut down on edit time and use only one camera. The other factor is keeping an accurate reading. If I do it in post the numbers could be doctored.
 
There is a great little Post solution to your problem and I am currently using it to create an on screen timer in some motorcyle footage.

It is called DVdate. - a plug in for PremPro.

Cheap ($20 USD) and very configurable - eg colours, transparency, font, position, size format and it also reads the timecode from the source.
