Any idea how this filmic effect was achieved?

I was doing some Vimeo browsing, came across this video - http://vimeo.com/2536260

I don't know if the makers are on the forum, but either way, I really like how they used the HVX to achieve a filmic look, gave the video a great quality.

Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on workflow? I have an EX1 myself, so I know the HVX is different, but seems to me a lot of smart post-work went on and am curious as to how to replicate myself.

In the comments the author says he used an HVX and Magic Bullets, and I can see a bit of the Blockbuster preset in there.

But it seems there's something else going on to get the nice look, which is throughout the video (not just the odd shot or two). I don't know if a 35mm adapter was used but there's some zooms that would suggest otherwise?

Any thoughts?

You should have read the comments 2nd one down he says :

2 months ago he said "It was shot on an HVX and all film FX were done with Magic Bullet in After Effects"

Ironic that you're calling me out for not reading the comments when clearly you didn't read my post where I said that the author of the video posted how he used Magic Bullets...

Additionally I was referring to the specifics rather than the general. It's all well good saying use Magic Bullets, but there's a lot of scope within that, and one always wonders if there's more to it than just one plug in.

For example I can see some fade effect/scratches/blotches etc as well as Blockbuster Looks effect. But I'm wondering if there's more. After all I'm down with the learning how to do things so I can form my own path with the knowledge, it doesn't really give one much info to keep things general.

come on andrew. im going to call you out for your attitude. dont be a dick. you are presenting a meal and asking for the recipe. if you did that at a restaurant youd be handed your hat.

there are shots here that to me are clearly "35mm adapted" and some that may or may not be.

the scratches/flicker are obviously post. color treatment as well. i think the overall vibe here is as much compositional as anything else.

what do you have to work with hardware/software wise? and its called magic bullet not bullets

I don't think there's a problem with my response, Josh's reply was catty and called me out, I felt it was unjustified so asserted myself.

Besides, I believe we're on these forums because we're all curious of the how's and why's. In this case I saw a piece of work that intrigued me and was curious how it's high standards were achieved, and moreover thought others would be interested in firstly watching the video as it's a good promo made with the camera, and secondly in figuring out how it was achieved in case it's a look any of us want to incorporate in any of our future videos.

For example, there's something in the look that gives it a very filmic edge vs the sharp crispness of video, but the footage doesn't look 'soft' to me. If this was the 'faded' part of MB Misfire doing it's thing then that's great to know, but it seems to me there's more going on than just that.

In a time when we're all seemingly looking to treat our video to look as filmic as possible, when ones sees a good attempt at it that makes me excited to fine out what they did to achieve it.

moreover, firstly, hitherto and forthcoming - dude. did you just finish a law class at community college?

"filmic" aint new to the discussion. weve been discussing that since like 1994 when stretching 320x240 to fake it in premiere was the rage. nobody knows better than the creator of the footage as to the specific recipe. so have you asked them? or did you just come here looking to be spoon-fed? its not that simple.

sit back, relax. im sure suggestions will follow.

you might also cross post over at lafcpug, there are a number of MB users there who may help...

No, I am English however, perhaps my vocabulary is just different to your own?

Additionally your impassioned response to my post is perplexing, I merely posted an example of good work hoping to encourage discussion into achieving such high standards, I'm not sure that's reason to go off the deep end.

sorry andrew, to be quite honest. im just attempting to "wind you up" a bit, (or shall i say "take the piss"?) based on the spirit of the first couple of posts in the thread. all in good spirit ; )

cheers

What's the deal?

What's the deal?

Andrew -- I don't know why these two are getting so stirred up. Especially after you clarified yourself. I think it is a broad topic you raised, but clearly you weren't looking for one person to spell out all of the details... just hoping to generate a discussion. Clearly, not the discussion that we ended up with.

That said, I've got nothing to add to your topic. Sorry!
