Any HMC users already started pairing up with the GH-1?

Hi people

Just wondering if any of you ladies & gentleman already pairing up the HMC 15X with the GH-1. Perhaps a wedding videographer who wants to achieve that "Bokeh" without spending on a DOF adapter?

Question is, if there is someone out there who has already been on the job with these two Pannys, would you be kind enough to tell me what kind of HMC 15X SCENE settings would suit the GH-1 best? I hope to pair up a GH-1 video one day with the HMC without having to tweak too much on contrast, gamma, colour etc. during editing. Just not too sure if these two equipments can compliment each other well especially when editing .mts may take a little more time.

Thank you.

...and oh yeah...What about pairing the HMC 150 with the SONY EX1. Anyone pair with this cam before without feeling dissatisfied due to significant aesthetic differences?

Thanks for reading.

this is exacly my question

i shoot wedings as well (and have been for 8 years) and would love to have somthing like the GH1 in my arsenal to complement my HMC150's

would i would like to know is specifically how much more light sensitive is it. assuming i can get some faster glass.

like a canon FD with a 1.4 ish f-stop

it would be great to see some side by side dark situation footage between the two.

I am contemplating this 2 after learning from other wedding videographers of the capability of this little camera. I don't know if Chris Watson of dallasweddingfilms.net has acquired a GH1 yet. I have looked at vimeo and found a couple of wedding shots there done by the GH1.

I'm not yet a fan of the whole video DSLR thing, and I'm convinced we've got a few years to go before they start to get serious.

That being said, the only one to yet come along that actually looks promising to me is the new Canon EOS 7D -- that offers a range of frame rates including 60P. There's also a ton more lens options in many different price ranges for any Canon compared to that lens system used by the GH1.

So, if I were out looking for a video DSLR -- I'd wait to see more from this EOS 7D before I'd make any purchase.

I just bought a GH1 to go along with my HMC150/sgblade. Going to give the GH1 a run through this week to see how well they match up. Crossing my fingers that they will look nice together.

Cheap adapters are made for every lens mount. The GH1 can use far more lenses than the 7D, including (of course) all the lenses that would normally work on a 7D. That's really one of the most interesting things about the GH1 and all micro 4/3 lens mount cameras, is the easy adaptability to any lens.

Yeah... I'm a fan of Barry Green, etc. -- but, with respect, that's kind of an over simplified statement. Lens mount adapters don't address sensor sizes, crop factors, certain features of certain lenses, etc. And, although the upcoming 7D isn't "full frame," it's still larger than the GH1.

God knows I'm not a Canon sales guy -- all I used were Nikons and I never loved Canons for a range of reasons -- but relative to video DSLR cameras -- you simply can't ignore the features of this new camera -- including progressive 1080 (30, 25, 24) and 720 (60, 50).

As I said -- I'm not in the market for a video DSLR and probably won't be for a few years. But, this 7D is the most promising video DSLR I've yet seen.

What are you referring to when you say lens mount adapters don't address sensor sizes or crop factors?

All I'm saying is that the m4/3 mount lets you mount anything to it. And that's true. The extremely short FFD lets you use things like c-mount adapters, or PL-mount, etc.

I never said anything about the 7D or whatever being better or worse. I just pointed out a factual inaccuracy.

Not sure where the 7D entered the discussion anyway -- this was a thread about HMC150 users pairing their cameras with a GH1...

This is a vast discussion, and there are plenty of salesmen out there who could carry out this discussion for days. I'm not a sales guy.

Crop factor explanation is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_factor

Meaning, that you can screw a lens on an adapter mount, but if you've got a 17.3 x 13.0mm sensor (smaller than even APS-C) -- the characteristics of your image will be significantly different from the lens you thought you bought.

Regarding Canon lenses -- a Canon sales guy can explain how there are proprietary features to many Canon lenses -- meaning an adapter to a different camera mount doesn't offer complete compatibility of features. I don't know the extent to which this applies to Nikon "DX" lenses.

So, if using lens mount adapters means the GH1, as you wrote, has "far more lenses than the 7D," -- then we also need to gauge the 7D by how many lens mount adapters we can stick on it. Then we need to take into account the Canon lenses that won't have a crop factor on the 7D -- and we need to eliminate the Canon lenses (and maybe DX lenses) with propriety features from compatibility with the GH1 -- resulting in a pointless comparison that no one in the world, including us, is really interested in knowing.

My real point being that lens mount adapters are in no way a magic bullet in still photography -- and few photographers on earth would believe that there are more lens options for the 4/3 system than for Canon EOS (at B&H there are currently 248 EOS lens options, 15 for " Panasonic Standard 4/3rds System," and a total of 95 identified as 4/3rds System).

I'm not picking on the GH1. What I was originally saying is that if I was in the market for a video DSLR -- like Desertfox -- I'd wait and take a look at the 7D before pulling the trigger on any purchase.

Hoping the OP would get more feedback on this topic:

Dude, GH1 can do 720@60p and 720@30p and 1080@24p (with pulldown), only difference is? GH1 did it first...

There's also a ton more lens options in many different price ranges for any Canon compared to that lens system used by the GH1.

Nonsense., GH1 beats the 7D on lens options in ANY different price bracket... from BH, KEH or any retailer that has photo or VIDEO lenses in stock...

So, if I were out looking for a video DSLR -- I'd wait to see more from this EOS 7D before I'd make any purchase.

Touche, although a quick search in Vimeo can pretty much tell you what the 7D is capable of, I would still wait for some extreme-real world-torture tests... from the kinds like Kholi or Hunter

Are u sure u are not a sales guy?....

eL ProduceR:

So, because the GH1 does things, I should ignore new stuff?

So, B&H is lying and you're correct?

So, you need "torture tests" to trust that fly-by-night company calling itself Canon?

So, placing a link on this forum makes me a sales guy?

I wish you well, "eL ProducerR," but you have quickly reminded me of why this forum can get tiresome. There's nothing I stated that is inappropriate, unfair, or unreasonable.

........ have quickly reminded me of why this forum can get tiresome. ......

Agreed

the OP question was how well would the GH1 compare/work with/complement the HMC150

especially in the context of wedding and event videography.

And then i added on a "me too" as i have some of the same questions

We all know that the products from canon are nice and may prove to have some advantages but that is not the topic at question.

to answer this question one would have to have used both cameras at some point, preferably together.

thanks
John

Desert Fox, John Deaver - I'm doing some tests later this week; I know we are doing different uses wedding vs shorts. But is there anything you would want shot in a side by side footage test?
conditions? frame rates?

Gentlemen.

I'm the one who started this thread and therefore I only have eyes for any sort of inputs without the bickering... so please knock it off and shake hands will ya? :D

As for now, I hope to see any kind of footage that marries well with the HMC 15X in the near future (despite the specific topic for this thread) regardless on whether it's a Lehmann Brother lens or General Motors telescoping motor. Ultimately as from now on, anything that has been experimented with the HMC 15X, uploaded for prosumers to judge online is the first winner! The second winners are losers like myself who don't take part in the experiment and just watch. (But, of course for the benefit of John the above and myself, a short video footage of HMC 15X and GH-1 shooting side by side would be much appreciated!.)

We are ultimately simulating our own domestic economy. Well, probably the German optic companies and the Japanese electronic companies are the winners at the end of the day! :P

Make love during this economic turmoil.

Hi Ken,

I appreciate your feedback!

For myself, it would be very kind if you shoot anything which you think is fun! One request from me would be a (Slow-motion) 720/60p with the GH-1 as a start perhaps? (Reason is due to my HMC being still too heavy for my heavy handheld Glidecam + I don't wanna look like ROBOCOP in a vest during Holy Matrimony and I hope the GH-1 would be a good substitute.) There rest is 'anything goes'! I know it can be tedious to experiment for strangers but I think it would be cool to know...as long as you have fun! :D

I haven't got both cameras, only the 151, but from what I have seen, the GH1 can also put out some nice vivid colours like the 151. The codec is not as good though, due to the lower bitrate.

The GH1 will give much shallower DoF if you use a fast lens, don't expect anything spectacular with the stock lens though as it is very slow, and therefore has a fairly large DoF, though not quite as large as a 1/3 camera would have at maximum aperture.

I shot test footage last night of the two cams. I will edit it out this weekend and post on vimeo.

my initial thoughts were:
The GH1 is light which was a big bonus compared to my HMC rig.
DoF wasn't as good as I was expecting on the GH1.
I had a hard time matching the framing because apparently I lose a lot of frame in the 35mm adapter. (for example I put on a 28mm lens on the HMC then used the GH1 at 28mm equivalent but framewise they didnt match up at all)
Sensitivity on the GH1 was nicer than I expected even though the kit lens is pretty slow.
GH1 had a punchier color look to it.

I tried to match the two cams both at 1080 24p 1/60 shutter and tried to match the f/stops but couldn't do it at always because the HMC150 coudln't pull enough light if I stopped down my primes to match the GH1 aperture.
