I just purchased the DVX100A and I find the manual to be vague. I'm interested in learning more about how to get the most out of this camera in the different modes. Has anyone published a more complete shooting book or guide for this camera?

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

Thanks for the lead on the Mullen guide. It looks like it is what I need. :)

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

thanks Terry !

I have my new AG-DVX100A and i am sure i'll lean a ton of new things i never tought about, even if i have 20 years experience in photo.

Always fun to learn more !
Seems to be a very well made book.

BTW this camcorder is so much fun and so good !

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

C'mon,
There's no one way to learn about camera, and as much as DVX is unique in comparison to other 1/3" DV cameras, many rules for DV camera still work.
Some of the real helpful articles:
American Cinematographer
1) April 2003 issue "Panasonic's AG DVX100, 24p in the Palm of Your Hand"
- John Fauer, ASC (for thsoe who shoot films, he's some one to watch; thecamera geek of camera geeks. Every camera company around the world hires him to test their new gears) personally tests DVX100.
2)May 2004
- My mentor(for real. She's like my mom. I've been a good friend of hers since I was going to be 2nd AC for a feature she was going to shoot... another InDigEnt flick), almighty Nancy Schriber, ASC is interviewed, regarding her experience with DVX100.

And also a clip shot on DVX100 by Matthew Libatique, ASC("Rqquiem for A Dream"). I saw it on Japanese website.

But most important thing is to try out yourself, like anything in your life- trial and error. That's how every legendary DPs have become who they are.

Good luck!

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

Who said there is only one way to learn? ???

If you noticed, Antoine has 20+ years experience in still photography. I don't think he's drinking anyone's Kool Aid. ;)

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

thanks Terry for the "rescue" hee hee... ;D

MiniDV,

I mean and wrote _ it "seems" to be a very well made book.
I dont know this book.
All i can say is that... i often learn a lot of new ideas even from "simple" or "basic" books. I also like "advanced" books ;)

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

If you happen to be in the Hollywood area, Burns and Sawyer offers a half day class (with breakfast and lunch) on the camera for $25.00 and if you take the class they will give you their DVD on the DVX100 (reg. $50.00) for an additonal $25.00. Check out their web site for info.

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

Do a search here on the Mullen .pdf. I don't think it is worth it as do some others.

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

Hey Dat,

In months and months of reading the posts here, that's the first negative comment I've seen about Mullen's guide. Can you explain a little bit why you don't think it's worth it?

Thanks,

Philip

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

I suppose if one already knew everything in Mullen's guide it might not seem worth the price.

If that were the case, then why would one need a book on the DVX?

It's not the Holy Grail of info you might have expected. It spends more time on certain aspects and not enough on others. But, I dare say I will benefit more from that $35 than anything else I could have bought for the camera for the same price.

Sure, most of the info in that manual can be gleaned from this site and others, but unless you are the Wi-Fi King or have 24/7 online access with hours to burn searching... then having some of this info in a printed form is nice. (you have to do the printing - it's a PDF). ::) :)

Well, for some strange reason, non-positive posts about the Mullen .pdf disappear from this forum. There was a thread discussing its strengths and weaknesses in detail, which I know I contributed to... but it's gone now. Some posts were negative, some positive, some mixed... but all gone...

My conclusion was: $35 is probably less than Mullen should be selling it for, 'cause he put a lot of work into it. $35 is more than a purchaser should be paying, 'cause it's unfinished, has some wrong entries, and many missing parts. It spends a lot of time on pulldown, has somewhat interesting/useful sections on gamma and master ped, a lot of information relevant to filmout which is not my interest, so I can't judge the merits of. There's NOTHING you can't find better here with some searching, but it can be nice to have something gathered together, printable and portable. Aside from the Gamma and Master ped, there's not much that will really give you information that you could really put to use in the field... that is, for those "moving up" to the professional features and settings of the DVX, it doesn't give satisfying in-depth explanations of what settings mean and do.

Note: I don't have the pdf in front of me, and I'm sure I named one or two more useful things about it in the deleted posts... so deleting them has not helped, but harmed....

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

There is nothing significant I found in the Mullen .pdf that isn't already available for free to you now. The user guide that is floating around is superior by a large margain. I bet Mullen spent all of 5 minutes on the 100A addendum...it is a complete waste. I got much more out of Wilt's 100A site then the .pdf. There is better and cheaper(free) information out there...save your bucks.

Hmmm... do you assume there is a conspiracy?!

Yes, there was a thread that discussed its strengths and a *different* one that discussed its weaknesses... that is the one you contributed to.

It's probably still around here somewhere, but this is not the same thread you contributed to before.

I remember being somewhat amused at the discovery of two diametrically opposed threads seemingly existing near each other without one being aware of the other.

Aw, c'mon... I really tried to be fair, and I don't think what I wrote was purely weaknesses.  Once I got the pdf, I just decided I would post the kind of information I had wanted to know before purchasing it. Do you think the assessment (well, my reconstruction of it) unfair?

As for the conspiracy... search on "mullen"... look at my "50 most recent posts"... I posted 3 times on it, all mentioning the word "Mullen"... all are gone.

Conspiracy? I don't know. I do know that posts (mine and those I was "corresponding" with) have disappeared. If you can find any of my old posts (in other threads) I'll send you a nice CD or two of classical music.

Anyway... when I was considering the purchase, all I saw were posts saying "It's great!" or a few saying "It's crap!"  I just wanted to post something more in-depth.

Here's my suggestion for Mullen (aside from "set up PayPal"): Send it to people for free, and let them pay what they want, with a suggested price. I think that would work better, since, for me, the uncertainty was what held me off (until I was able to buy a used one).

Wow! Free Classical music CDs?!!! :o :o :o

Are you certain your comments on the Mullen guide were made within your 'last 50 posts'?

Hey, I've always respected the Barry phenomenom of this site and you're no exception. If you say your posts no longer can be found, then I'll believe you. :-/

I know for a fact I posted on June 2, 3, and 4... currently, at least, within my last 50.

The CDs are nice! Do you prefer Classical DVDs?

Re: Any good books on DVX100A?

8-Track!

I just love those unexpected breaks in the song as the solenoid kicks the head over to another track.

Then the song is slowly faded up from about 10 seconds prior to the point it clicked over so as to help ease you back into the song.

Priceless!!!
