What is the benefit of using a red filter for black and white footage?

I am absolutely sure that a red filter will provide great results on a video camera. The result will be a dark sky with white clouds. Therefore the filter would also compensate some of the lacking latitude of video in that specific situation.

I have a question, too: Somebody on this thread said, that it looks great in BW to push the gain. Was this so to get something like a super8-look or does the image hold up better a gain-boost in BW than in colour?

believe me when i say, a red filter looks AWFUL in DV. Perhaps in DVCpro50, its useable, but in DV it is not something you want to do. The Color saturation sends the DV codec into a panic. it pixelates like crazy. it is not pleasing ot watch.

Hmm... But in BW the red tones should turn in pure luminance information. BW is 4:0:0 when you put a DV-cam in that mode or am I wrong?

nah but the problem is the camera does not record B&W. it records a colr signal, they in post you switch it. so the blockie reds trandslate to the BW image.

TimurCivan,
I had a feeling that red filters wouldn't do the same in video.
Depends on the format. DVCProHD should handle it a lot better than DV.

By the way, I saw Evin's B&W footage at the HD Bootcamp. Wow!!!!!
The wide shot of the apartment complex looked like a shot out of "Raging Bull."

of course... but were talking DV. You can do damn near anyhting with 4:2:2 colorspace....

Thanks R. I'm going to put together a BW short now that I know what the HVX can do.
I still do want to try filters though. I have a 4x4 #12 orange I used to use on my Hasselblad with T-max. I'm gonna try that and then the red.
E.

BTW you can turn the color off in the EVF. This will allow you to preview in BW.
