Any former Vegas users?

Has anyone here switched from Vegas to Avid? Tell me how happy (or not) you are to have made the switch.

Yes, I made the switch. Very happy that I did.

The depth of Avid is incredible. There is a reason why it is used so widely. I know there is temptation to use FCP or Vegas and etc., Just stick with Avid. The more successful you are in the business the easier it will be to trade up to a better Avid platform.

FCP and Vegas are limited.

Do tell where FCP is lacking compared to Avid. As an FCP user, I would like to hear this.
I would disagree.

Yes I like hear it also..I started with Avid but now I'm looking into the Vegas program as a viable NLE. Especially how much they improved the program with version 6.0.

Since I own both, I will give a short list where I think Avid is superior:

color correction
trimming
bin manangement
real time capabilities

Iwould not agree that Avid outpaces FCP in any of those arenas.
And did you mean that you own both Avid and FCP or Avid and Vegas?

Actually, I own all three and more. If you don't agree with my list that is fine. Avid vs Apple is the eternal debate among lower end users. NLE's are just tools, and I find Avid the best tool for me.

Vegas' audio tools are good. It started as an audio app then gravitated towards video. If you combine Avid with Pro Tools then there is no competition. But, if you look at price, Vegas is the clear winner. Also, the color correction tools were copied from the DaVinci interface ( Secondary CC interface is great). Vegas also accepts almost any codec and can spit out in any codec. 5.1 surround, great exchange with Sound Forge.

If your decision is based on price, then go with Vegas. I personally like Avid.

Avid vs. Apple is the eternal debate among "lower end" users?
Okay, sure.
Tell that to Walter Murch.

I hope you find what you want. It all comes down to the editor anyway.

THX1138:

I find it curious that you are an Apple disciple and yet cruise the Avid forums. - not happy with FCP? Yes, FCP is lower- end compared to Smoke, Quantel, Avid DS Nitris, and etc., Walter Murch is not the only editor nor the best one in Hollywood. 90% of the broadcast and film facilities use Avid - I will leave it at that.

Galt:

Sorry about the hijack. Wasn't my intention. Just stumbled across this thread and was curious as to TotalX's opinion.

TotalX:

Agreed that it all comes down to the editor.
I would also agree that Smoke is probably the finest NLE out there. I'd put it above Avid and FCP easily.
I just disagreed that Avid was superior in the areas you mentioned.

FCP has become the likely contender for Avid's position. Both are fantastic software, in my opinion. No doubt about that.

"Vegas' audio tools are good"

Dude, Vegas's audio tools smokes any NLE's out there by a mile. I have been using Vegas since V 3.0 and can tell it is one rock solid NLE, perhaps the most stable NLE out there. In my personal opinion, Vegas is like a paint program that depends on your imagination to do spectacular things. Other NLE's require countless plug ins to do what Vegas can do with it's own built in resources.
