F55: Any footage from the F5/55?

Now that the new Sonys are arriving, Ive been waiting to see anything from these cameras that are a bit more cinematic. ive seen some very short clips that were a little nicer but still waiting for something wonderful to be shot and corrected.

And it's sad that over the past few days, the ONLY info on these new wonderful cameras pertains to this new Red lawsuit. Yes it is very important to me BUT if the train is still going to be be still moving along - lets not get off track.

Thoughts on the picture itself compared to other cameras???

If you haven't seen Dig, check it out. Pretty amazing https://vimeo.com/54571154. Download the file from vimeo for a real treat. This is just beautiful to me... check out the highlights on her in the cafe by the window, or the skintones all around. Just great beautiful modern images.

not much yet.. I am expecting to see by now, since the cam is being shipped to the stores, rental houses..
even here not much..

wanting..

Very few cameras have moved, from what I know, and it was just this past Monday and Tuesday. You know you do have to give people some time, Ben Hur wasn't made in 4 days. Most people spending this much on a camera aren't terribly interested in playing with it for the benefit of the internet.

Not to state the obvious, (funny when someone says not to state the obvious and then they immediately state the obvious) but since the cameras just started to ship (Feb 11th) and the cams have such versatility with both raw and lite codecs (unlike RED) allowing it to have many uses from run and gun, ENG, corporate videos, broadcast, not to mention confidential shoots and projects where footage can't be posted publicly.... I would expect it will be some time before it gets put to use on a dramatic or cinematic project that will be properly DP'd, shot, not to mention the time needed to go through post process, etc...

What you can expect to see initially is a lot of footage of trees, bridges, peoples pets or gardens flood the web in the next few weeks as we have seen in the past whenever any new cameras hits the streets... but of course this is probably not what you are looking for.

Nate, I resemble that remark!

I do too, in a way. But I'll be reticent to post much because expectations are so high, and you need to have something in front of the camera besides your cat and a backyard. Luckily I have some of LA's most used locations only a couple miles away, but even then you need a good subject for "tests", it takes time and effort. Paid work comes first.

But one of my cats has a perfect 18% gray patch on an otherwise pure white cat. Much better than a gray/white card and he will even wake up once a day to pose...

I'd think at the price point there is a dilemma now, whether getting an Epic or F55.
Footage, among others, being shot by Sony promoters, DPs, short films, etc. is expected,
for launch of cameras as such. Give it to Philip Blum, to get som likes on Vimeo,
if no one else wants to post footage.
(Please, just do not color it heavily in Magic bullet please :))

Does anyone know what is expected wait for an F55 in the US, if ordering now?

Too soon to say, but my advice is if 99% of what you plan to shoot is 4k raw and you have little or no need for compressed 4k or HD on a regular basis then go with RED. If you need low bit-rate codecs like XDCAM EX, or XAVC on a regular basis then probably F5 or F55 makes more sense, and hopefully the 4k raw out of the F5/F55 is decent. From what I've seen lately on the F35 thread the more and more I realize the most important aspect to achieving a film-like look are the highlight renditions. Forget everything else.

Anyway there's not enough material available right now to judge the F5/F55. Even once there is it could be weeks, months, years until someone really unleashes the beast from within the F.

Hey if you are in dire straits why not buy Epic now and in next January re-evaluate? By then all firmwares will be released and the F5/F55 will be a little more time tested, etc.. Heck by then maybe something entirely new will be out.

Like a lot of people my work varies to corporate, documentary etc. BUT most of my work IS indie films. Since some are low budget some would rather shoot a smaller format than 4k and with the new F cameras I thought Id have all basis covered. My worries are that in the end if most people(and me too) decide that the Sony 4k raw does not look as nice as the Red, Id loose my larger budget shoots thus making the 4k purchase not paying off in the end.

My hopes are that it's looks somewhere between the Red and the Alexa - then damn would I be happy that I did not messing this HUGE decision up. So much anxiety with all of this and I have been prepaid to shoot a feature for 4k camera and have to get something within the next couple of weeks. Auuuuggghhhh!

Yes Michelle, working within such a split is hard to do with one camera. I had bought a red camera in October then sold it before even receiving it once the news of the new F's were unleashed.

In your case, since you are shooting in less than a few weeks I think given the Sony's JUST hit the streets and heaven forbid you run into any issues on a feature, etc.. you might for at least this time around stick with RED and even rent if you can and that way buy you some more time to decide what to actually buy. Just a thought.

Maybe we should start a thread on what people want to see shot. Maybe describe a test shot you guys would like to see?

That may help pass the time......:)

I've never seen a test or test shot where someone didn't ***** and complain that it was showing a true test to their standards (usually by people who have never tried to arrange a test.)

Amen Duke.

Someone solicited input in another thread about what would make a good test for a cam-shootout and you wouldn't believe all the ideas thrown around that lead to some flame wars. I suggested a lattitude test and was bombarded by comments and +1's that a test should simply be to make the best image possible and nothing more.

I rest my (your) case.

Yepper!

I was the F35 DIT on the first ASC PGA test a couple of years ago. It was a HUGE test! 250+ people invloved on set at Universal back lot. Needless to say it was meticulously planned for weeks and took months to post and prepare the presentation of findings. Around 20 ASC members led the technical end of it. Carefully constructed shots to cover many practical real-world challenges.

People still complained that it wasn't right or fair. Hilarious.

Yep I hear ya......scratch that. Cat videos and bird feeder clips await your scrutiny!

Carlos, you have prices ready yet on your stuff?

I do have much more time than 2 weeks to get a camera. Im hoping to have something within the next 3 - 4 weeks. Im thinking that I do not wish to put myself under(poor house) with the F55 but either the Epic or F5 seems to be in my future. I like the Epic because of higher frame rates at 4k, more exposure meters but does not have good sound issues and will not miss that damn loud assed fan. I like the Sony because of the various formats, wider latitude(although not that much) and sensitivity. But Im still worried that the 4k footage with not be as cinematic as the Epic and loose feature film work which is where I make most money.

Ill just hope that I get to see some F5 raw with some beautiful footage soon so I can make up my darn mind.
