Any experience with the 18-252mm (SCL-Z18X140) Zoom Lens

"... Sony now makes a more substantial looking remote for the zoom which I have yet to try - it's about $1,500 ..."
Do you have a part number for that zoom remote? I have been searching for same and have yet to find it.

Oops! Found it.[h=1]CBK-DCB01[/h]

I just looked at the new zoom, this must be a mistake;

I just don't understand the design, why a box?

I think I just figured it out I should have read the details, with this box it looks like you can interface and plug your Zoom handles in and control the zoom of the Sony lens. Still seems odd though.

Starting to wake up now, the CBKDCB01 along with the 18-252 would allow me to use the F3 on my jib with a zoom lens. Any zoom device with a canon or fujinon zoom and proper cable would work with this device. I wonder if this would also allow start-stop via zoom handle.

Yea, useful for jib, other remote applications, like aerial shots, cars, etc. Also... nature... remotely shooting critters.

Still the design looks like something you would find hanging off a studio camera, would need to add velcro for field use.

Not much information on the unit, details and overview are sparse, I wonder if it is even being sold here in the U.S. yet?

yes this truly is an odd bird......As you said it looks more like something you'd use on a pedestal in the studio. Just when we thought that Sony couldn't make anything more awkward than the existing zoom rocker on the F3 they come up with this Dodo. Where the rocker is placed on this box is just silly.
I wish that someone would come up with an interface so that a Microforce can be used on the F series cameras, but I doubt if that'll ever happen. What's needed is a simple zoom controller that can be mounted on the fluid head's handle, how hard is that?

Hay Peter, the box is an interface, you can plug your micro-force into the box and plug the box into the camera and your good to go. Works with both canon and fujinon cables. Sony designed afterthought I think.

well, didn't know that....obviously. An expensive "interface" though.
I'll pass....

Some info from the Sony UK site:

Zoom rocker for direct zoomingThe CBK-DCB01 features a zoom rocker that can be directly used for zooming.

Connector for camera remote controls to extend functionality

The CBK-DCB01 can be connected with camera remotes such as the Sony RM-B170 remote control panel to enable enhanced camera controlling. The unit can also connect with remote control panels from Canon and Fujinon for focus and zoom remote control. [Focus: Canon FR-35 and Fujinon EPD-21A-A02. Zoom: Canon ZSD-15M2 and Fujinon ERD-20A-A02.]

Compact design for ease of use. The unit is lightweight and ergonomically designed and can be attached directly on a tripod bar.
Camera cable

The CBK-DCB01 is supplied with a 1m 8pin cable to connect directly with the PMW-F series cameras and other camcorders.

Here you go Stephen...

What I wonder if it will work with zoom controls that have Fujinon connectors like the ones for the EX series cams like the Libec controller which has the full size Fujinon ENG style plug and then goes through an adapter goes down to the EX series style Fujinon jack.

This could be useful on jibs although going with a Bartech and a Heden motor really makes more sense. Investing a lot of money for a highly specified use.

If you need a CBK-DCB01 in the USA, I would just call your Sony dealer directly. Someone like EC Professional in New York ought to be able to order it for you even if they don't stock it.

I was on the phone with AbelCine today and they said they can get them, also have a email out to the local Sony rep. here in the DC area waiting for a reply.

I received this information from the Sony Rep. here in the D.C. area over the weekend, he got the following information from the Product Manager in Sony HQ in Park Ridge, NJ.

The CBK-DCB01 interfaces with some Canon and Fujinon demand controllers (electronic zoom and focus). It is possible to control Focus, Zoom and Start/Stop on the following cameras: PMW-320, PMW-350, PMW-500 (with the 350 servo lens) & PMW-F3. In the future, the SCL-z18x140 lens will be compatible with the PMW-F5/F55 too. Then it will also work with the CBK-DCB01. By the way, the CBK-DCB01 also has a zoom rocker. It can control zoom without a demand controller attached. Cable length 300m is possible. Imagine controlling a lens on a camera mounted on top of a 50 foot crane!
