Any Drummers? Need Your Help. Remove Graffiti From Kit

First for the cymbals, what brand, series, and how bad are the marks? You are right about the sound being altered by using products. There are specially made cleaning products out there for cymbals. With you talking the cymbals being in the $300-$600 I'm assuming either hi-end Paistes, Zildjian Ks, Meinl MB20s or Sabian Vault Artisans.

If the marks are light, some warm water would work best, just remeber to dry them.

My suggestion is when sharing a kit, always, always, always, have other drummers bring their own snare, bass pedal, and cymbals.

Actually, Its a set of Zildjian A Custom cymbals: 18" A Custom Projection Crash, 19" A Custom Medium Crash, 20" A Custom Projection Ride, and 14" A Series New Beat Hi-hats.

The marks vary: my 19" crash is completely covered around the bell all the way to the edge, the ride is moderate, and the 18" crash and hi-hat are actually in decent condition. I already tried the water idea as soon as I was able to get them off stage, but he was really beating my equipment. Then once he was finished, and I had a chance to speak to him about the marks, he responded: "well, that's your **** set, so it's not that bad."

Didn´t know that.
So if someone else did it, just bring them to your trusted instruments dealer, let them clean it and let the "abuser" pay the bill...

Yeah, I'll probably do that, because then the new heads will be on the bill as well. My cymbals are at least 10 years old. While they were meant to be beaten by drum sticks, I doubt they were also designed to be cleaned with alcohol or Mr. Clean.

Correct REAL forged cymbals (I'm going to get hammered on this one I know)
As in 'hand hammered'? haha...not on any modern Z. My 40s vintage A's are though.

I was the Zildjian Rep of the year in 1992 for the northeast territory as part of Ouzunoff & Associates.
Can we starving drummer/filmmakers get a 'special discount' if we mention your name on the next 'Z tour'?

Where are you paying $300-$600 per cymbal for As and A Customs? Cause you're getting ripped off if you actually paid that. They retail for $100-$300. Only the hats will push $350.

In fact I have a 18" A Custom Projection Crash and it only cost me $180.

I just bought a Custom A cymbal pack for about $500 (including a $100 discount)

I think it was a "16, "18, ride & HH. I've blasted thru a few of these crashes in my day, but at such a cheap price I think they're worth it.

Damn, I never knew there were so many drummers on this forum!

No I meant..to me...forged cymbals are the ONLY cymbals.

No...this is almost 20 years ago now (damn, I'm getting old!)...but I do have a bunch of old samples laying around...maybe I'll dig them out and post in the marketplace?

Excuse my poor attempt of humor. I agree on forged. There's nothing wrong with machine hammering but it takes going through a stack of Z's to find one that really 'sings'.

Oh well, it was worth a shot. Any of your old samples have 'Special Selection' stamped on them? I'd be interested if so.

So, I was playing a show last night, and another drummer used my kit. He took a Sharpie marker and colored his drumsticks black. Needless to say, my drum heads, rims, and cymbals were COVERED in black marks (besides the fact that he had a total disregard for my drums and beat the hell out of the heads). For the drum heads, I'm just gonna have to replace them, send him the bill. But the cymbals are about $300-$600 a piece. Does anyone know how I can remove all the black marks from the cymbals and rims?
Use the guy's face, but remember to rub with the grain, or you'll damage the grooves.

Then use lemon to remove any excess blood from his face.

If that doesn't work, hand them in to a proffessional to clean them, and send him the bill.

Sorry, but what are you refering to by wire?

Cymbals are from Cast ingots or Sheets of Bronze of various alloys. Tin and Copper with the Tin content ranging from 8% to 24%.

Hm. That's weird. Then why do you end up with a longass spiral of wire when they break? I always assumed they were made from bronze wire.

Do you mean cymbals like this?

Those are formed and then cut into that spiral shape. They're effects cymbals.

Most Cymbals break like this:

No, I mean my drum hit the edge (don't remember if it was a crash or a ride) and it looked like a slinky. The cymbal wasn't made of concentric circles like in the bottom pic, it was a spiral. To me it looked like square "wire" wound and fused.

Oh well. Maybe it was some weird experimental thing that made it out into the wild.
