is it really a hassle to shoot ntsc in pal areas? ie. is it worth just renting a pal camera when i get there (south africa?) i'll be editing the footage there also and it's (hopefully) going to be for south african tv's.

I say, always use the region that the film will be presented. If your main target is indeed going to be South Africa then shoot PAL, however if you plan on having a US release as well, I would probably shoot NTSC becasue it will create headaches later on.
