any advice on timelapse sunset/sunrise shooting?

Hello!

I was wondering if someone might be able to give me any pointers on shooting timelapse sunsets, sunrises, clouds, etc. I'm particularly interested in how to get long-lasting shots with good exposure so that I could have a 30 sec. time-lapse shot, without it being overexposed at the beginning or underexposed in the end. I would like to be able to capture the changing colors after the sun sets for example, not just the sunset itself. I've experimented with changing exposure during the pause intervals and at times in works, but other times it doesn't, so overall the shot does not work. Recording every 5 seconds seems to give me a good time lapse effect, but with a constant exposure, it gets too dark after the sun sets, so I can't capture the sky, clouds. Is there a way to smoothly change exposure during shooting or perhaps it can be done in post? Thanks so much!

I have always used Manual Iris when shooting sunsets. Otherwise everything but the sun will be way to dark to see. Same with clouds, you get a flux in the auto iris as clouds pass and filter sunlight.
