Any advice on getting a stepdown ring off?

I'm a moron.
I have been using a 35mm lens adapter on the HVX for a few days and I had to use a stepdown ring (82mm to 72mm) to attach the achromat. Well, we're done with the adapter now, but I cannot get the stepdown ring off. It won't budge at all.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
 
Grab a household rubber glove, put it on, press your palm flat against the ring, and twist.

It may also help to try to match the temperature (or exceed it) that things were at when you attached the ring.
 
The rubber on the bottom of a sneaker has worked for me, too. If anyone else needs to get any filters off.
