Antichrist - Lars Von Trier

I listened to the SlashFilmcast review of the movie and just the descriptions were making me sick. This sounds like a complete waste of time.

I did not enjoy the use of ENG style zooming too much for apartment dialog interiors about 15 minutes into the film. Made it doco looking in contrast with very artsy tv-ad grade b/w slo-mo shots. The overall sylized look of the film with a bunch of concept shots, style shots was kind of cool (though most were "borrowed"). The two priciples are real good actors. But yes, the lines they were fed. It was kind of slow and just plain shocking. no drumbeat movement, totaly misleading trailer.

But I am afraid I liked it more than the recent Uwe Boll releases. Esp that one using PETA footage.

"Antichrist" - people think it's complete rubbish or a brilliant work.

Count me in on the latter. However, had I not (accidentally) seen "Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom," this film might have disturbed me a bit more.

It's hard to "like" this film. But for me, I appreciate it on many levels. It seems to be a very personal film for the director, as this was a vehicle for Von Trier to (try) to exorcise his personal demons of depression, anxiety and (literally) nightmares . . . all weaved into a simple, creepy and extremely graphic tale, and at the expense of the audience. Like it or not.

It reminds me of a work that has a more extreme Lucio Fulci type of aesthetic, where plot and dialogue take a backseat to the "fantastique" imagery and themes, along with plenty of symbolism. I think the film works on a comparitive level. I think if you try to watch the film with any other mindset, it doesn't work. That being said, I did find the journey of She very compelling, especially when one puts a magnifying glass to her pysche and motives. The ego of He was also something that had me thinking, as I put it into a greater perspective.

Yes, I did find myself laughing at some parts - it was just so bizarre that that's all I could do! But I think I needed to laugh a bit here and there, as the mood was so unbelievably full of dread (especially when they entered Eden).

This movie is definitely not for most people; it will NEVER get a wide release. I fully expect the majority of people who do see it to hate it. I already know that many of my colleagues here will completely disagree with my sentiments about the film. :)

But I LOVED Salo.... infact i "borrowed" a copy from the origional KIM's Video in NYC. the only place that had a copy....

Salo was incredible.

I quite liked it (well, in so far as you can 'like' a movie like this). It was ... special. But certainly not to everyone's taste.

 Wow, Timur, I'm surprised by your "Salo" love. :)

LOL! Yeah, I always catch myself when I tell people I "liked" that film. The word "like" is just not appropriate. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I agree with you Timur, but from a filmmaking POV, isn't the opening sequence worth the price of admission alone?

Beautifully done. Shame about the rest (although the crew should all be commended).

There was some good and some bad for sure, the bad started when a girl cried out in pain on one scene, everybody in the audience just jump in the air, scary time for sure. : )

I don't know what to make of this one. The cinematography was some of the best I have seen. The acting was incredible and basically everything technically about the film was on point. I admire the audacity of Von Trier but for me it just didn't gel. I felt like the "shock moments", which were definitely shocking, were not needed. I assume it was to assert that sexuality was to be punished and it took this woman extreme measures to get rid of the temptations of her sexuality. At least that is the way I took it and I have no idea what most of the film really meant. I was pulled in by the film and it kept my attention but I was left not knowing what the hell I just watched and not knowing what to think of it. That isn't always a bad thing I guess but something about it just didn't do it for me. I'm not big on this type of content to begin with but it just left me thinking that was pretty f'd up and I don't know why it had to be.

my whole point was its like hiring the best of the best to make a student film. underdeveloped story and poor directing, with the best cinematography, sound design, and art direction around....

The actors definitely gave it their all. I can't say that I enjoyed any part of watching this film though. That's not always a bad thing.

I enjoy watching people be committed to what they do. The film didn't bore me, but it didn't enthrall me either. The premise was bad, the plot was confused. It looked pretty (but lacked coherency). If you take the positives for what they are then its an enjoyable film.
