Anyone seen it?

IMO,
and i quote this from my Facebook away status that i was typing while the credits were rolling...

"lars von trier is a thief. he stole my time, money, and good mood....
let me clarify. AntiChrist was the longest, most horridly written piece of donkey shi* homage to student film, in existence. He Stole time from Willem Defoe, and Charlotte Gainsbough. wasted their talents, and insulted the audiences intelligence. Then, to just to be the bacon on top of the Doucheburger, he has the delusion of grandeur to dedicate the film to Andrei Tarkovsky. Dick."

ive never been angry that a film was so bad before. IT just was plain awful. The writing, the special effects, the subject matter.... Willem and Charlotte, tried their best to "act" the parts.... but the parts but the dialogue is so GOD AWFUL noone cares. People were belly laughing at every turn because it was so damn stupid, but took itself so seriously.

Agree? disagree?

They've been talking this movie up around Austin since it showed at Fantastic Fest. Judging from the trailer (which is all I've seen), it looks like shock for shock's sake. (Which makes sense if you've seen any of Von Trier's work.)

Movies should be many things. Punishing is not one of them.

Give me Uwe Boll over Lars Von Trier any day.

The shocks werent even neccesary for the story to be effective. its like he came up with 3-4 "shocking" sequences, and then said, ok lets see if we can make a movie around this....

The trailer really grossed me out...

The last shot has them doing it after all these weird demonic things and such...yuck.

Really? Generally when people like Timur and Höfer, whose opinions I value, weigh in with their reviews, I listen.

I think what AlexD is saying is that most niche films don't appeal to most people. and generally, that's true. We all have our own trusted circle of people who recommend movies to us. People outside that circle, including professional critics and recommendation engines like what netflix has don't have nearly as much influence as word of mouth from trusted people. which is what makes twitter and facebook such powerful tools for filmmakers.

that aside, I thought AntiChrist was a mess. which pains me because Breaking the Waves is one of the greatest works I've ever seen. it changed me. Haven't liked much from Von Trier since then.

Hey Zak. Love your movies.

I've been really excited to see this one, that's too bad its not working for people. I think it looks beautiful.

Honestly, Zak, if "niche" films like these are going to appeal to anyone, it's people like Timur (and myself) and probably a decent number of members of User. We're (for the most part) filmmakers, and for many of us, seeing and experiencing films that fit into just about any niche or genre is vital to growing our understanding of craft, and of what works and what doesn't.

I agree with you on Von Trier's work. "Waves" was an astonishing film. It's hard to believe we're looking at the same filmmaker now.

Good to know there are like-minded champions of art films on dvxuser. We are few and far between.

AlexD - it is a beautifully crafted film visually.

usually when alot of people give reviews like this, it means it is a very good film.

DUDE, I am ALLLLLL about art films.....

Im the biggest fan of Alexandro Jodorowsky, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Fellini, Herzog, Goddard, Video Art in all its forms, and Public access TV. I am the one that usually thinks the "stupid artsy fartsy" movie is the bomb...

The aformentioned filmmakers all created "shocking" films.... but it was done in a way that left you feeling richer and enlightened.

This was just retarded.

PS mad props to ELMER LANG...... That guy is a genius...

I looked at it as a heady intellectual discussion, certainly not for most tastes out there, but I saw it with a pretty receptive audience at the Nuart in LA.

Some stuff was challenging, but it was original, fresh, it looked at life from a new perspective with a new set of eyes, and even if I disagreed with the film I left with a strong opinion and a clearer vision of MY values.

So all in all, I call it a success.
IMHO.

Cheers.

Ive seen student films with better writing.

Cmon, she screams "you bastard" like 100 times...

and that dialogue about her thesis.... My god, it was like nails on a chalkboard it was so rubbery and self aware, but not in the good way....

NOW. I will say this, Anthony Dod Mantle..... Genius. Propmaker, Genius. Sound design Genius.

And then that damn Warp effect..... God theres so much i just thought was tacky and misplaced. its like when a kid hands in a project with cotton balls and glue all over a piece of oaktag thats so last minute the glue is dripping off....

....that aside, I thought AntiChrist was a mess.

That pretty much sumes it up Zak - exactly what I thought.

There is only two or three short moments (a few seconds) in the whole thing, where I like what I see, but besides that....

Frank

This movie disgusted me. It was a tasteless mess. I still regret not walking out.

If anyone must be entertained by disgusting sexual violence, go look at one of the headlines on CNN.
