Anti-Reflective Coating -> Filter

Hey Guys,

The anti-reflective coating on my lens was virtually wiped off. Long story. Anyway, is there a filter out there that can recreate the original anti-reflective coating properties.

Thanks,
Dave

I find it terribly unlikely the AR coatings are gone. You said it was a long story, so I'll take your word for it that it must be true and I couldn't comprehend the circumstances necessary to do it.

There isn't a substitute for worn coatings, but a well designed lens contains many coated elements, so unless you're talking about losing all the coatings on each element, I don't really see the big deal here. Worse case scenario, all the coatings are gone on the outermost element---you only have at most a 4% reflectance on an uncoated lens, so probably a single element isn't much to worry about... However, any Tiffen "UV" "Haze" and some "Clear" filters have AR coatings, but you just have to read about specific ones because the quality of the coatings are very different from one product to another, or can be at least.... Srry to be fragmented, I'm tired. Hope this helps.

Lost coating on the part where light enters in a lens system (front of the frontlens) is not a problem. Only a few % less light is entering the lens if the coating is gone and less than .01% of the light (=negligible) is being additionally backscattered. Avoid placing filters in front of the system in yr case because the higher front reflection highers the risk for ghosting on strong out of image field lights.

Outter coating is correct.

Outter coating is correct.

I now have reflections of the inner lens elements when shooting into intense light sources. Mostly sunlight, etc.

Thanks for your input.

Regards,
Dave

Ahhh-okay. That's flare. Flag your lens--in other words, put something in the way of the light source for shade--you have to make sure there is a shadow on your lens to avoid flare. You can't do this obviously if you're shooting direct sunlight, but all lenses have some level of flare in direct sunlight. Get in the habit of flagging your lens. The contrast will be better, colors richer, and you'll irradicate flare. Get rid of the flare, man.
