ANTHER NEWBIE NEEDS MIC HELP!!

Re: ANTHER NEWBIE NEEDS MIC HELP!!

chi_red... I thought I had the two mixed up, but I checked and no, that's correct. I had an mkh416 for the last 9 months or so and it's classified as a super-cardioid (+ lobar). Also I want to say that I had EXCELLENT results with that particular mic indoors... All I ever hear is that the Sanken CS3 is the only mid-length shotgun that can pass for indoor use and I'm telling you that the 416 worked pretty much the same as any hyper I've used... which would normally be my go-to mic for interiors. So the usefulness of particular mics will overlap into the range of other mics. My personal experience has been that the better a mic is (read: expensive) that the better it works in ANY situation, beyond the particular situation it was designed for.

On most shotgun listings these days they say "line + gradient"... which naturally means a pinpoint of pickup with a gradual fall-off. I was just trying to cover some basic mics as I've used 'em. The mics that I like and have used the most are omni, cardioid, hyper-cardioid, short shotgun, and long shotgun.

I didn't forget about the figure 8... I just don't think that's a high priority pattern for most AV usage, but it certainly could come in handy in the ways Oleg mentions. One of the many mics that I bought, but didn't keep for long, was the Rode nt2000. I liked that it could be an omni, cardioid, or figure 8, but I just didn't like that mic overall... plus on that particular model I didn't hear a lot of difference between two people speaking to it as an omni vs. the figure 8. Oleg, you are a professional... and I'm just "some guy"! I wish we had a quick way to know just what kind of shooting the person asking the question was doing. I don't think most of us are operating at as high of level as you are... and I mean that in the most complimentary way.

I'd like everybody to take note of what I said about myself above. I'm not an expert. I'm just a guy who really likes sound and bought a crap-load of stuff to learn what I could... then I sold off the mics and other stuff I felt I didn't really need. My comments are based on those experiences and the gear that I bought and sold. (So occasionally I'll probably get some detail wrong... and I hope somebody on here will quickly correct me!)
