Another way to record DVCpro50? + Other Qs

Other than the yet to be released firestore that is intended for the hvx or a p2 card is there any other way to record dvcpro50? Like another firestore unit that's already out or some other company's thing or something? (I know nothing about these DTE drives or whatever else there is out there)

I ask this because I want to use dvcpro50 but don't want to have to throw down HD money if I'm not gonna be shooting HD.

Also on a side note how does dvcpro50 look on a filmout? (obviously no one has tested the hvx for this yet but I just mean in general)

And what kind of computer(mac moreso than pc) would be needed to edit dvcpro50?

------

Sorry if this seems like a lot to ask at once but I want to shoot a feature in the summer that will be going to dvd and (obviously) has a slim to nil chance of ever getting a filmout so I don't want to bother f***ing with hd and new monitors and down rezing etc. But I want to know that if that 1% chance does happen that dvcpro50 will blow up better than the dv my current dvx.

If dvcpro50 does make a better dvd than dv(which I've been told it does) and does make a better filmout, I'll start saving up to get an hvx in summer.

Oh and guys please don't lecture me about:
"YOU DON'T NEED AN HVX N00B WORK ON YOUR SCRIPT, LIGHTING, AUDIO, ACTORS ETC"
I know that. I'm asking if I had the same production values would dvcpro50 hvx be better than dv dvx for dvd's, filmout and so no one judging it could frown on it for technical aspects(the last of which has never really happened to the dvx anyways, but you know I want equal opportunity at festivals).

------

Anyways thanks for reading.

If you buy a PowerBook, it might kill two birds with one stone:

1) It has the power you need to edit DVCPro50.

2) I couldn't find the thread, but I believe you can record onto a hard drive by daisy-chaining through the laptop. I think you have to open up FCP, and do a log and capture. Try a search through the threads. I know I read it somewhere.

Several ways.
1) a DVCPRO50 deck
2) a laptop running FCP, Avid, or Canopus software
3) a laptop running Serious Magic HD Rack (okay, this one's premature, but we expect it to be forthcoming)
4) the CinePorter
5) the CitiDisk HD

Well, the problem with the question is that prior to the HVX, DVCPRO50 has only been possible on 2/3" cameras, and 2/3" cams are going to look a lot better than 1/3". With that said, Jan said that SDX900 DVCPRO50 footage makes for an incredible blow-up.

Any that meets the minimum specs for FCP5.

Unquestionably it will. The HVX has a sharper lens, native 16:9 chips, and DVCPRO50 offers twice the color resolution and less compression.

Hmmm. I should try this -- shoot a similar shot on DVX100B/DV and HVX/DV50 and then "blow it up" using PhotoZoom. Not exactly a scientific test, but it should prove illustrative.

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum, so appologies for potentially re-asking questions that have probably been sufficiently answered.

Anyhow, I've been dying to start shooting my own video/hd projects, and am looking towards a purchase of the HVX200. However I have recently purchased an Apple 20inch iMac G5 (iMovieHD)
Question 1: Is this computer powerfull enough to handle capturing and editing HD ( I will not initially be using it for proffessional aplications, and do not mind waiting!)
Question 2: Can I just use the camera and Firewire cable to download DV and or HD straight to my computer, or will I need expensive P2 Stores or Drives.
Question 3 : Is iMovie HD an apprpriate application for editing. (Bearing in mind I do not rate flashy-editing effects, and the majority of cuts will take place in-camera)

An answer to these fundamental querries would be greatly appreciated.

Much respect,
jasond

Hi Barry,

You should mention that all three of these solutions are preliminary. I actually tried the CitiDisk HD at DV Expo and where he initially tried to tell me that it was working, and that in order to get it to work you neded a P2 card, I showed them how to do it, he had it in a 720P/24PN mode, so from there it started to act as if it would record, but it did not understand the stop/start commands all of the time, so it has a bit of work to do yet.

I know that Dave Lenetsky's team is hard at work and I assume this option will be among the first out of your grouping here.

And last but not least, you forgot one that while being preliminary is on target for release in March, and that is the Focus Enhancements FS100.

Best regards,

Jan
