Another short film shot with F3 - Alura and RED lenses

Short film clips from a 25min short I DP'd with the F3. Tried to get a different look out of the camera, Used Techincolor, as well as custom settings.

Lenses: Arri Alura 45-250, RED 18-50, Lomo 80mm

Lighting: Pepper 150, Arri 1k's Arri 650's, open face 800's.

Recorder: BM HyperDeck Shuttle, uncompressed 10bit

Shot to 10bit 4:2:2 uncompressed But this footage is from the SxS.

I gotta say, that 45-250 was a BEAST, we loved it, was heavy but totally worth the weight. Had a few great AC's that helped dolly it around while outside in the bitter cold.

Lots of exteriors on the shoot, most with the Alura. Int. mostly with the RED18-50. We had a DIT station that was a little complicated but it worked, always had it attached to a UPS because of the long data-dump times for the uncompressed footage.

aw, the 150w pepper is a nice little light. i think it's cool that you could use those kinda basic tungsten lights to such good effect.

and the classroom, that you were able to work against those windows and it works even recording to the cards.

Really like look of it:)

Thanks! yeah reallly tried hard with the small budget we had to make it seem bigger. Wasn't an easy shoot hahaha

Lovee that pepper! The classroom was a tough one, we had to wait for the right light to shoot in it. Had a 650 for a rim/hair light in there to separate everyone from the background. I also used a fog machine to give some atmosphere to the classroom, made the air feel thicker. I was shocked at how well the sunlight worked in that room even on SXS. It does look better in the uncompressed, but could have totally worked with the sxs footage if needed. Again dont underestimate the F3 without S-log, it still has a crazy amount of DR.

Im sorta kicking myself in the butt for buying larger lights, I find I'm constantly knocking them down to half what they are now with the F3, 150's are now my friends haha.

i figured that was fog, there was just a wisp of it in the background of one of the close-ups. i think it worked well for the scene.

Yeahh that wisp kills me, I think that was from a grip by accident, but its not in the take used I think. Its still in post-production now haha

Nice, now we HAVE to see what the uncompressed footage looks like ; )

haha, well hopefully when the editor is done with it I can chop something up, I'll tell you this. The uncompressed really felt like film, it was also a bit sharper, more defined. The sxs codec limits the amount of detail that can be seen, so the uncompressed looked like we shot with a bit more resolution. Looked to me almost like a 2k scan from film.

I'm not quite sure what the final grading is going to be, I graded that sxs footage myself, and was only slight changes, but the director might wanna push for a different look, so we'll see.
