Another John Woo short

Hey all. Realized I hadn't posted this. It's from the John Woo contest back in June that went horribly awry. We did some post work to crappy-printize the edit, but all shot on DVX with ... $100 budget? Mostly original music.

Sorry for the TERRIBLE compression (I don't know anything about it) and for sending you to MySpace...

pretty decent vid, john woo would be proud, where can I see more films from this fest, I knew nothing about it, which is sad, because I am a huge John Woo fan

The vids are up on myspace.com/strangleholdgame

Basically the contest was (supposedly) for amateur filmmakers to make homages to Woo's style. What ended up happening was: 400 more entries were submitted than expected, uploaded the same weekend that MySpace changed their video system. Unsurprisingly it crashed, the entries were recieved but failed to upload correctly, then were eventually disqualified after 3 weeks even though the contest holder claimed all entries submitted by the deadline would be eligible, then with a backlog of videos to watch they ended up just choosing the finalists based on view counts.

Three of those finalists clearly violated contest rules (they'd been uploaded months, in some cases years before the contest was announced), eight were foreign and/or clearly had a budget of 10k+ (which I wouldn't qualify as amateur) and the short that won the audience award used a MySpace bot to gain votes. The contest runners refused to disqualify the ineligible videos to allow other videos in as finalists, even changing the contest rules to stipulate that it only mattered if the grand prize winner was ineligible.

All in all it was an atrociously run contest that left a lot of people (including myself and 25 or so others who had been most buzzed about) feeling pretty terrible about the whole project.
