Another how did they light this?

I've always wanted to do a 50's themed shoot with the same lighting style as below. What are some ways of achieving this?

I think there are 2 soft sources from the right and from the top above their heads. Then some separate light for the backdrop. Looking at the 2 red balloons, i think there are also lights infront of them.

You pretty much nailed it. Look at the reflection of the lights in the ballons and the shadows. Looks like fluorescents with a big one overhead. The ones on the back wall just shoot upwards. Color is likely done in post. Cheers

I guess I see two sources right over the camera. The dual reflection in the red balloons, and no two such reflections in the blue, suggest those two lights are pretty close to the camera POV. Top light slightly back of the group. Light just behind the Man in the center to kick light on the wall and under the clock. And a bigger single softbox/diffuse light to the right of the camera.

And then there's the candles...

Color looks like the white balance was warmed up; I'd try to get the level of warmth you want as close as possible in-camera; pushing colors around does add noise...

what kind of light do you think would be appropriate for the 2 lights close to the camera?

Reviving this thread as I'm shooting something similar next week.

What would you use as the top, side and front lights if you were shooting on location in a house? What diffusion?

What was this frame originally from?

Aside from an overhead soft light source and some lights over the camera, there seem to also be some lights on the side or above and behind the subjects serving as a rim light. Overall its pretty flat soft looking light... Im interested to know how they lit it too and especially how they got that gradient on the back wall so nice and dark.

what is that rig you used to hold the kino?

It is referred to as a menace arm. The components are available at Modern Studio Equipment. The pipe is schedule 40, 1 1/4, also referred to as speed rail. Here is picture of the back of the rig. Also, the ratchet strap at the back is essential to relieve strain and stabilize rig to the bottom of the combo stand.
