another dumb question from me

can someone explain why cameras aren't rated for contrast?

i know they do it with display devices and it seems to be the biggest variable in what i consider overall picture quality.

its just a product of a properly exposed shot. if the cameras f/stop is wide open, then obvoiusly, theres very little contrast in whites. if the f/stop is really small, then theres again, little contrast, but this time with blacks.

contrast isnt really the right term your looking for.
really your asking for a mesurement of both low grain and a proper exposure. this is what most people would equate with what your looking for in a good picture.
this isnt really the right place for this q too.
hope this helps.

well we kinda do measure the contrast, but instead of saying things like 700:1 contrast ratio, we talk in Latitude, such as this camera has "7 stops" of latitude.

if I'm not mistaken, constrast is often defined as something like the number of gradations from the darkest dark to the whitest white. or something like that. are we saying latitude expresses the same thing with a different name? and if so, how's the latitude/contrast of the hvx?

Film is closer to 11 stops and much better highlight retention. The DVX is something like 6.5 stops with Cinegamma, the HVX does a little bit better, but anything is better than nothing.
