another camcorder as deck

After I get my DVX100 I was wondering about a deck. I was thinking about just buying a small mini-DV camcorder. Can I record on the DVX 100 and then put it in another camcorder to capture to my computer with the timecodes all being right etc? All the info should be on the tape from the DVX?

What if I wanted to send the editted video back to tape? Just record it to the other camcorder?

Does it matter if it's a Sony or something else? I saw a really nice Sony mini-DV for &399. Or should I stick with Panasonic? Which one?

Hey Zim

I went thru this exact dilemma earlier this year. I'm in PAL land, so model numbers are probably different, but I found that the low-end Panasonic models were not able to read the timecode on tapes recorded on the DVX. I bought a Panasonic and had to take it back, and ended up getting a Sony, which works like a charm.

Try taking a test tape recorded on the DVX into the shop with you and asking to play it in the display cameras. If you can see your timecode on the screen when your tape plays, then the camera can probably read it and there's a good chance everything will be fine.

I have also read that low-end Canons have issues with Final Cut Pro, so if you're using FCP you might want to steer clear of them also.

Hope this helps - good luck!!
