Inspired by the recent thread of michael blackburn's 3d tracking, I decided to look into tracking and see what I could learn.
I found out about a few heavy hitters:
boujou - www.2d3.com
realviz - www.realviz.com
They were all pretty expensive so buying is currently out of the option. Then I found this little gem:

Its a FREE tracking software under development...called Voodoo. I downloaded it and fiddled around for an afternoon.
Here is my result

I realize the lightning doesnt match but as you can see the tracking worked pretty well.
For those of you interested in 3D tracking, basically what you need is a 3D software that can import 3D tracking data (Maya, Lightwave, Softimage)...get a tracking program (for starters, use the free Voodoo program) and then take your live footage, feed it through the tracker -> the data extrapolated is then fed into your 3D program and a camera with the tracking data is created. Then just render out your 3D objects within the field of view of your camera.
of course there are a ton of little details to consider, such as making sure that your camera focal length matches, but with enough tweaking you can end up with some pretty impressive composited shots
anyways, for a more comprehensive list of trackers, check out
