Anomie - an excercise

ANOMIE is a full-length drama I'm shooting for another fellow here in Los Angeles. It's pretty much just me shooting and also setting up the lights and grip and wiring everyone with lav mics. Whew! Whenever I had the room to do so, I was shooting at the long end of the lens for minimum depth of field. Here's some shots from the first day.

All scene file settings normaled except:
Master ped: +5
Gamma: High

In Final Cut I did a quick post job with the 3-Way Color corrector.
Blacks set to -10
Highlights jacked up to 400
For the final pic (in the tub) I bumped up the saturation a tad.
Contrast (Bezier) was set to +10

For this first shot, I had a naked 650 fresnel to camera left (frame right) bouncing into some foamcore. Camera right (frame left) was another 650 fresnel on a beaver board and apple box with full grid and quarter CTO, stopped down with a full scrim.

Here's the reverse. Lighting did not change.

Interior of the apartment. Still lighting from the floor with the same 650 fresnel. In post the highlights for this scene were elevated to 350.

For this shot I just used the beauty lights lining the top of the mirror - a bank of six clear 40-watt tungstens. Behind the actress (frame left) is a 350 fresnel with 216.

A difficult shot to light. A 350 fresnel was suspended over the tub with full grid, half CTB, and loaded with a single scrim. Black duvetyne was draped around the upper half of the tub for negative fill. A Chinese lantern with a 250 watt 4800K photoflood was also half-draped in duvetyne to camera left (frame right) for fill.

I think they look pretty good! Good artistic lighting; just a little glitch with the practical blowing out there.

But why jack the master ped up to +5 if you're planning to crush the blacks so much?

I would love to see some of this in motion.

Thanks! I let the practicals blow out most of the time anyways, so I just let it go in this case. Not really a glitch, but a stylistic choice.

As for the master pedestal question, I find that limiting what the camera sees often backs me into a corner when posting. Bumping the pedestal up creates a less contrasty image and allows me more freedom to play around with the footage later on in the editing room.

i am with you on this one. Shootıng super flat gıves much more room to play. cause you can then choose what goes to black wıth gamma curves ın post.

These grabs look really good, I dont like the blown out look of grab 3 very much but the lighting on grabs 1 and 2 is really impressive
