Annoying smearing and trailing

Hello,

I was wondering how you get rid of the annoying "smearing" or trailing that happens with movement in the dvx -100. I understand it is trying to emulate film motion jutter, but it just looks bad, when you make moves side to side or somebody in the frame moves quickly there is a "trailing" effect that happens, has anybody noticed this.....Any ideas ?

p.s I noticed the MTV show "wild boyz" uses the camera and doesent seem to have this issue.

..youll likely notice that absolutely nothing youll see from this camera has any smearing or trailing in it. frankly i have no idea what you are talking about. it sounds like your shutter speed is either set really slow or the camera your working with is broken.

the dvx doesnt emulate film motion.. it actually HAS film motion. adjust your filming and camera movement techniques to suite. ..just like shooting film.

You're probably at 1/24 shutter speed. You'll want to turn that down to 1/48 or 1/60. That will take care of the smearing. Also, if the "jitter",technically it's strobing, bothers you and you must do fast pans, shoot at 60i not 24p. Any sports event that I shoot is almost always done in 60i.
In Barrys book he gives the rundown on pan speeds. It is the same with any film camera. The maximum pan and tilt speed chart is also in the american cinematographer manual.

Hope this helps your dilemma,

This is a much asked question. Do a forum search (link at top of site) for the word "smear" or "smearing" and you will find lots of information.

And, as others have posted, what you are experiencing you would also experience with a film camera. Pumping up the shutter speed can help but not necessarily.

I understand film has it's limitations in panning movemnet, however there are countless examples of camera movement in film that is frenetic and full of quick pan movement t but without any excess of "catch up blur" ( just about any action movie or even many tv shows like The shield or NYPD Blue . Alot of the time the dvx produced a kind of "flash back sequence" look with it's smear instead of a clean action follow .. I'll mess with the shutter a bit and take any other suggestions..Thanks...

update.. just talked to a panasonic tech support guy who was very helpful.....he said it's not a shutter issue and that the smearing is exagerated in a interlaced monitor or lcd and also that i make sure i am properly importing at 24 p into my final cut system..so hope that helps anybody that had the same question as me ..

Are you using the pan from a tripod? turn the OIS OFF. It can do this by trying to compensate for movement. (Page 16 in Opp. Manual)

Anyway, the frenetic motions you see in action movies and tv shows are playing in an interlaced monitor (your TV)

Maybe they were running in 30P ? Many "frenetic" motions has a subject in front of the camera, what helps in the smooth illusion.

Ulisses

Glad to see you resolved your problem.I had the same issues but after burning some test footage out to DVD and viewing it on a regular interlaced crt tv I saw that the problem rectified itself. When viewing the mpegs or even the avi's on my TFT computer screen the problem was screaming at me.Grounds for the purchase of a production monitor or cheap tv to use as a tx when editing.Barrys book was also quite insightful and lucid.
