Annoying problem, help please.

I got a Sony GV-D1000 mini-dv deck last week and i am still wondering how to capture my footage properly through final cut pro.

As i can see, when i shoot 24PA footage in Squeeze mode and i put my mini-dv tape in my new sony deck, it add black bars automatically for the playback and it seems like theres no option that i can turn off in the menu. When i capture the footage in final cut, he gets the bars too and i can't have the real 16:9 ratio im looking for since theres always black bars in the footage im capturing and then exporting.

Maybe you could give me a few tips? It would be really appreciated, i'm about to pull my hairs off.

Re: Annoying problem, help please.

If you're actually shooting in squeeze mode, then when you view the tape on your camera, the image is squeezed, correct? If so, then the problem lies with a setting in your deck. It probably is only a setting to unsqueeze the image when viewing out to a monitor. Therefore, the issue probably also has to do with your settings in FCP. Make sure your sequence settings are set to work on widescreen media and your video should not have black bars.

Re: Annoying problem, help please.

And the only way i can set my work to "widescreen" is my checking the anamorphic 16:9 option in the capture/timeline presets?

Re: Annoying problem, help please.

FCP should "notice" the 16:9 flags in the footage and automatically recognize the footage as widescreen material. You can also check that setting in the capture presets.

The sequence also has to match what you want to output. If you had a 4:3 sequence and using widescreen material, you'd see black bars above and below. The easiest way to change your sequence settings work in a 16:3 aspect ratio is to choose the widescreen sequence preset. You change change your sequence settings any time you want.

Re: Annoying problem, help please.

I would love to select a widescreen preset, but in FCP HD 4.5, theres no such presets. My only option to get widescreen is to check the anamorphic 16:9 option in my capture/timeline presets.

It seems like its the only way it could recognize the correct aspect ratio of my footage.

Re: Annoying problem, help please.

Crop your sequence as a whole so it gets rid of your black bars. I think you may be getting confused if you captured using Squeeze or Widescreen mode (with the black bars)

Re: Annoying problem, help please.

If you shoot squeeze it is as easy as selecting the anamorphic checkbox under your sequence settings

Re: Annoying problem, help please.

Aight thanks alot. Some dumbass technician from where i bought my camera told me that squeeze had nothing to do with anamorphic 16:9 in FCP, so i tried everything i could without checking this option... sigh

Seems like he has no idea what hes talkin' about.
