GH4 Announcing Atomos Shogun – first 4K HDMI recorder compatible with the GH4

Speaking of audio, this is from the announcement: " The Shogun offers improved audio handling with an included Lemo breakout cable for XLR audio giving balanced audio and phantom power". Hopefully will near more about the audio
function from NAB, sounds exciting.

Am I the only one who isn't interested in having a 7" screen strapped to my camera? Not only do I not want the added cost of something I cannot use, but often I don't want my subjects to know exactly what I'm focusing on....
If you're shooting 4K you're gonna need a large monitor or you won't be knowing what you are focusing on either...

I have a Blade which I use as a recorder on an older Z5 and as a monitor on my Gh3 - love it.
Great size, clear, sharp has lots of sexy stuff like waveforms, focus peaking in lots of colours. My only gripe is that with the GH3 I need an HDMI-SDI converter which makes it a little bulky. Not sure if you need this with a GH4. Clients love it on indoor shoots but I wouldn't use it on the run.

Seriously? $2K for a recorder? That's more than the camera, which does a hell of a lot more than just record.

$2K is waaaaay overpriced for what it does, as is Panny's YAGH. These are $500 devices at best (and they'd still make quite a profit, I bet.)

I can tell you for a fact that the components cost more than $500.

plus the marketing, distribution, software, manpower & etc.
2k is Fair for a really nice screen and 4k recording with 120fps support atomos has to make a living
id love for it to be lower

Will the GH4 output start/stop triggers through HDMI and will it cause the Atomos Shogun to record when the camera tells it to???

I enquired about this a few days ago and although it related to the Blade I guess even Atomos doesn't know.

Hi Phil,
The GH4 has not been released yet. It has not been tested with the Ninja Blade. The Blade supports HDMI timecode and stop/start flags from a small number of Sony and Canon cameras at present.
As far as I know the GH4 does not output timecode or triggers over HDMI and you will need to trigger the Blade manually.

Good news, at 2:56 he specifically says the start and stop triggers work with the GH4 during the bit about the Ninja Star.

So we have some kind of XLR Breakout, and start stop triggers.. I think I might be able to tolerate the annoyingly large screen after all :)

Is there any word if it can do HDMI in to record then also send SDI out to another monitor for video village?

I received this correspondence from Atomos this morning..........they still cant confirm that start/stop triggers will in fact be present on the Panasonic GH4 HDMI output.

Hi Phil,
I spoke with Jeromy and he informed me that Panasonic intend to add stop/start flags. Until I have an actual GH4 in my hands and test it with our recorders I cannot give you a definite answer.

Heres the thing
you cant record internally when on 4:2:2 10bit. So You better of to trigger through the monitor itself. .
