Today we finally got our first batch of Sony EX3/Nikon adaptors back from the anodisers. They look stunning and now fully kitted out they look even better!

We have been testing "The Adaptimax" over the last week and are extremely pleased with the results.

Photos and price is now online and there will be sold on a first come/first served basis. You can chose to have it any color you like, as long as it's red!

The Adaptimax has been CNC milled from high grade aluminium, before being anodised and fitted out with genuine Nikon parts. The result is an extremely professional piece of kit at a super low price.

Now EX3 users are not stuck with the cameras stock lens focal length, or a very expesive Canon and Fujinon lens, as they can now use this adaptor to put their Nikon lenses on the EX3 and get some stunning telephoto shots.

The price is very cheap, but the quality is very high.

Check out the signature below.
Cheers

wow that is a ton... but maybe not when you want to get up close w/o being physically close!

Lets see some test footage!

5.4 magnification factor though? That's a ton my friend! I'd rather wait for the EX-3 relays coming out.

You use it to your advantage.

Stick a 300mm F4 Nikon on there and those rabbits or deer at the other end of the field fill the whole frame! Its fantastic for wildlife.

And what does a EX-3 relays cost? Bet you a hundred its a huge amount more than £119.95.

Lets see some test footage!

Tomorrow I will go out in the garden and shoot some test footage of the birds feeding with the stock lens, and then with the 80-200mm 2.8 (my longest lens)from the same spot. Might be lucky and the squirrel will come along.

If I had a EX3 I'd want something like this, and this one looks sweet but I'd really want one with appature control. Even if it was a manual dial with a screw in lock etc Its only a manual level, no electronics needed. I have some very nice G type lens as well as some sweet non G.

14mm x 5.4 = about 77mm, not too bad, it would be nice to see the DOF I would get. The 85mm f/1.4 being 460mm would be a fair bit more limiting to work with.

I have just got back from shooting some bits and bobs locally. The "Adaptimax" worked beautifully and I got some great stuff that I wouldn't have been able to capture with the standard lens. I should have the clips up online later today.

Tony wait no longer!

I have just added some footage shot with the Adaptimax Nikon adaptor today. It's been overcast and extremely dull here but I got a few shots which compare the full zoom of the Sony EX3 with the 80-200mm 2.8 @ 200mm. As you can see there is a lot of difference and the image is sharp edge to edge.

The 80-200mm 2.8 was on F11 throughout the shots, but even so gave a much shaller depth of field than the stock lens.

There has been no color correction and the footage was shot flat.

i must say that it looks pretty cool. limited application but still looks good. DOF even looks pretty good. If you had unlimited space and time you could set up your shots and get very far away! can we see how 70mm compares to the stock lens?

I should imagine very similar. I don't have a lens covering Nikon 70mm though to see.

I would love to get my hands on a 300mm 2.8 or a F4. I used to own one but sold it last year because I hardly ever used it. Now it would be perfect to have in my armoury.

I.M.O. it mustn't be hard to make an adapter with iris control for those Nikon DX lenses.
Just make an opening in the adapter at the point were iris level of the lens is when it is connected to the adapter. For the simplicity it can be just a tapped screw that you drive in and out. If you drive it in it moves the level and if you drive it out the spring of the level is taking care of closing the iris. A real iris ring would be preferable of course.

I have always been thinking why something like this can't be done. Why do we have to put in a relay + 35mm adapter+ lens? Any explanation why this simple setup with the Adaptimax being not as good as B4 relay ($6,000) + 35mm Ultimate adapter ($4,500) + lens setup? I don't have an Ex3 so it won't matter to me but I just like to know the workings of it.

It can be done, but it won't deliver the same results. Just mounting a Nikon lens directly to an EX3 is going to result in the same field of view and the same depth of field as the stock lens, at equivalent focal lengths.

Having the adapter in place, with its ground glass, changes the field of view and depth of field.

Thanks, Barry, for the explanation. Okay, so basically this adaptimax is good for if I want to put in a longer focal length lens instead of the stock lens that came with it or professional lens which cost thousands of dollars, correct?

Well, sure, if you think about it the EX3 lens is, what, 82mm? So if you used any Nikon lens longer than 85mm you'd be adding extended focal length; a 200mm or 300mm would result in some quite telephoto shots.

The interesting question to me would be, how does something like a Nikon prime resolve vs. the stock lens -- do you actually get better-looking footage from the prime lenses? If so, that'd be another reason to consider an adapter like this.

Steve please consider GuyB's post as this is exactly what the Nikon mount for RED has. It's a simple screw in and screw out piece that pushes on the pin what controls the aperture ring behind the lens. I'm not sure what kind of edges you'lll see with the 11-16 Tamron but @ 11mm you've got about a 60mm FOV.

If you want to get the MOST out of your Nikon mount you would look into this asap, as this application DOES have as much validity as your adapter itself.

Also, I would consider a Canon EOS mount in the very near future with similar pseudo manual control. I smell some Contax Zeiss on this puppy.

This would be a great additional item to own with the EX-3! Can't replace the relays by any means, but an alternative if you just want telephoto shots.

Lots of good points which I will look into no doubt about it.
Lor, take a look at the quick footage I shot yesterday on http://www.cameraadaptors.com

The adaptor really comes into its own in telephoto, which is where it comes into its own.

The Nikons are very good and you get edge to edge sharpness. As good as the stock lens? Difficult to tell without proper tests being carried out. Have people been complaining abut using Nikons with their 35mm adaptors? No. So pretty safe to say the results are very good. Stick a long lens on the Adaptimax and you will be getting shots impossible to get with the stock lens. And you can manipulate the depth of field to make it much shallower with the Adaptimax fitted with a long lens, opening the aperture and moving back.

This little adaptor opens up a whole new area for EX3 owners to explore.
