F5: Announced: 4k RAW on FS700 with Odyssey

It's the only logical thing for Sony to do, I highly doubt many people were buying the proprietary raw recorder for the FS700 simply for the ergonomic nightmare it would create. I think this move will sell a lot more FS700s.

What I am waiting to see is the 4K ProRes option. I don't think that exists yet does it?
I'm not sure how many people interested in dealing with RAW uncompressed files will want to use the FS700. With Pro Res it starts to really become the bargain alternative.
Until then I'm holding on to my F3.

Compressed 4K video will come soon, but it is not in the upcoming firmware update.

I like the Odyssey for the monitor alone. Does any other monitor offer an "edge only" false color focus? It looks like when you are in photoshop and do: "filter" "stylize" "find edges" and then use a false color when in perfect focus. Does anyone else offer that?

hey Mitch - is the upcoming update going to require an SSD??
Yes.

We have talked to a number of our dealers, and some are prepared to perform the update for clients either for free or a nominal fee. The process takes perhaps 15 minutes. I would certainly suggest contacting them beforehand to ask and make an appointment.

I won't speak for who will or will not offer this service. Several have indicated that they would assist their clients.

Does this mean the firmware updates are not user installable, or just that if you prefer some dealers would do it for you?

thanks
Paul

All this sure puts the F5 in an awkward position.

F5 owners have expressed wanting some option of 4k XAVC, otherwise the only option is 4k RAW in 16-bit with nothing in-between whereas the FS700 (which I believe even shares the same sensor as F5) will soon enough offer 4k RAW with codec option of ProRes.

Very interesting.

Paul - it's user installable if you have an SSD. I currently use the 7Q as a monitor, only - so I don't have SSDs yet. I believe in the future, the updates will be installable via USB, but I could be incorrect.

Sorry if my question caused confusion.

This is true. I really hope they do give that option in the future.

Totally user-installable. The process is almost fully automatic. But if you are using the Odyssey7Q as only a monitor and don't own any drives, then you need the help of someone who does have one.

Yes, it does. I believe the F5 has slightly better shadow detail but i'm more than happy with the 700/O7Q combination. I'm more interested to see the F55 and O7Q working together, although i think that would require 4 SDI cables? There's a massive bonus with the single one on the 700!

Thanks for the confirmation Mitch...

cheers
