Anna Nicole Smith

I was shocked as to how many people seemed actually 'shocked' by this news.
I had no less than FOUR people today contact me in various way with the sole intention of telling me that Anna Nicole Smith had died.

The strangest moment was when I was on the phone with someone who called me at work to tell me...and a coworker walked into my office and interuppted my phone call so they could tell me the same thing.

I don't mean to sound callous but you would have thought Kennedy had just been shot the way people were talking about it.

I was sitting in editing class and this girl in my class got a text from her Mom. It is a strange phenomenon. It's not like any of us knew her or that she was a mother theresa or major celebrity. But this is America, and we loves us some celebrities.

If Anna-Nicole and Marilyn Monroe would have grown up in each other's times, I think it's completely plausible that Anna could have had Marilyn's career, and Marilyn could've had Anna's. Marilyn was an example of someone who soaked the fame out of every single media outlet at the time. But that's back when the number of media outlets was what, six? These days, you're talking about literally thousands of media streams. And with that unlimited supply of exposure, it's not ridiculous to assume that a modern-day Marilyn would've overexposed herself to the point of a drug-riddled reality tv show depressed overweight/underweight delusional nutcase. And with the relative obscurity (comparitively) that Anna would have received back in the 50s, people wouldn't have known that she was a complete moron, allowing her the benefit of the doubt and the chance to star in movies. I mean it's no secret that Marilyn Monroe was a pretty crappy actress.

Wow!! I'm shocked!! Drugs...prescription and otherwise...were supposedly found in her hotel room. Who woulda thunk it?

I'm with you - and celebrities are one thing - but this wasn't exactly Meryl Streep we're talking about either. I mean, what was she a celebrity for? Trimspa? An infomercial?

The whole thing is very odd to me.
Really.

Then at work suddenly I was the oddball because I didn't feel the need to discuss her passing. It was kind of surreal.

Like I said - I'm not trying to be callous. I realize she has left behind a daughter, and she was still very young. Both of those things are very tragic - but in the end, I really can't react any deeper than I would reading a story about a complete stranger in the paper.

Am I just a jackass?

I think an entirely better comparison would be ANS and Jayne Mansfield. Who know, maybe her daughter could become the next Mariska Hargitay.

I'm reminded of one of the first scenes in children of men...

Luis, you should have told your boss you were much more affected by Anna's death than you had originally thought and could you please have the rest of the day off from work :)

yeah...i doubt trimspa does very well after this.

The news came down on set this morning and the first thing the DP said was, "Time to sell my TrimSpa stock." As much as I have little regard for ANS, it is always sad when someone dies so young...I still laughed at the DP's response though.

RIP

In my opinion, this is the most intelligent and insightful thing said in this thread so far.

and the Mansfield vs Monroe argument... that's just a matter of opinion. I like Mansfield better. I guess she doesn't have quite the clout since she didn't Lewinksy Kennedy and DiMaggio. Oh well, I guess I'm just not into blondes. Give me Audrey Hepburn any day of the week.

RIP Anna Nicole Smith. Though not surprised, I was sad to hear about this happening.

When I heard the news on my way to work, I knew my day would change, and, to my surprise, I was struck with sadness. I was reassigned to do an interview with someone who knew her. The characterizations he made of her only made you feel sadder. No, she wasn't a great actress, or a terrific role model. Certainly, she was a spectacle. But no one ever said she was mean. Everyone just says the same thing . . . that she was a very sad person. And with the recent death of her son, I'm sure she felt for a time, that she had little reason to live.

It's a tragic story, emblematic of the folly of fame, and the sillyness of Hollywood. My friend told me of a shoot he was on with her once, where she was so disoriented, that he and the cameraman finally just decided to turn the camera off. I thought that was nice. I've shot her myself a few times, and found her to be sweet and unassuming, in the fleeting moments my lens was near her.

I, like the rest of the world, only knew Anna from what the media fed us. Which is no way to really "get to know" someone. I'm sure she was nice but, as we all know, the media loves dirt. And society loves eating it or rolling around in it. The attention Anna Nicole's life and death is receiving is proof positive.

Anna posed professionally for only two short years. But for the past 12 years she's mainly posed for courtroom proceedings and tabloids. So two years of real fame and twelve years of media-induced-hype. The only reason why she didn't fall into the "Where are they now?" category was because of the drama in her life and our fascination with "celebrity" dirt. Anna Nicole's life became one long train wreck and, sadly, a lot of people enjoyed watching it. And, possibly, she might have enjoyed giving us that dirt. It became the only thing real in her life. The only thing she could count on.

I am sorry she died so young, but the biggest tragedy in this story is that she left behind a daughter. I only hope that she is raised in an environment that is VERY different from the one she would have been raised in. Sounds harsh but it's true. The only hope that little girl has for a "normal life" is to get her as far from the spotlight and courtrooms as possible.

When an infant is worth billions (that is thousands of millions for those who can't grasp a number like that) I believe that the phrase normal life is like giant shrimp.

It just doesn't exist.

you know is funny that you mentioned that, I was watching incubus last night, a film that stars taera reid or whatever the chick that comes out in american pie, so anyway the film is horrible and I turned it off about halfway through the movie but when I was watching it my brother told me " hey did you know that you can rent that chick to come to your party for 4grand" I was like what!! you can rent celebrities now? this is new to me it just goes on to prove how superficial hollywood had become, side note.... dont rent incubus, save your money for some candy or something......

Speaking of actresses no one cares about...

Mena Suvari was in

American Pie
American Beauty
American Virgin

I detected a trend there...but she broke the pattern with Loser.

Or did she?
