If Anna-Nicole and Marilyn Monroe would have grown up in each other's times, I think it's completely plausible that Anna could have had Marilyn's career, and Marilyn could've had Anna's.

Actually I doubt this. I think people responded to Anna because she had a quality/look that echoed Marilyn Monroe's. Without Marilyn, there would be no Anna, kind of a chicken and the egg scenario.

Anna was posed and paraded as the next Monroe, from the very beginning they(Smith's handlers) tapped into Marilyn's iconography. Marilyn Monroe was actually a talented actress and a master at crafting the cult of celebrity before it was fashionable. The difference between the two is that Marilyn was famous, and Smith was infamous.
