Animating a piano playing by itself

I know that they have pianos that play melodies, where the keys move by themselves, however at the current time, I do not have access to this piano. So How can i make a normal piano play it's keys by itself, because im lost.

this is the only way i can think of it because i saw a short music video my friend made and he use like a cheap green wall and like keyed out the green depending on your editing program.

as weird as this may sound
you would need a person to like fully dress in green or like blue and just make the person play the keys then with your editing program key the person out and i think that should be good.

good luck

i would move the keys from the weights inside of the piano. if your showing the keys, you can cut tight so you wouldnt see someone plucking the hammers inside the box to ge the keys to move on the outside. ..its not somethig you would want to do for any complex fingering, but if your just hiting a few notes it would be fine. especially if you loc the shot, you can just split the shot and comp over the guy at the hammers with a clean plate of nobody there. fi its a wider shot.

Depending on the shot / angle etc that you want and hopefully a "locked of shot"...I would shoot someone playing the piano/tune so you had a "map" of the action. ie know and see what keys are pressed at what time for what duration.

With camera in same place , I would then shoot all the key down /combinations that you need. Manipulate the keys /chords from inside the piano. Basically stop motion but not necessarily in order or sequence.

Lay your map up on a layer
Match shots of chords and keys up on a different layer.

See you back here next year ;-)

PS maybe easier to do in your NLE instead of AEFX

I think that this may be the best option possibly. I'll have to fondle with something. Never tried stop motion before could anyone elaborate

In this case I would shoot a few frames eg two or three seconds of all the "animations" that you are going to need to match the "live performance map".

In my NLE (Premiere ) I would name the clips in a way that I could reference them to the map. From the two or three second clip I would edit them to a timeline above the top of the map layer.

I suggest the NLE edit because of R/T playback that you will need to see how you progress.

Pity that pianos are played with two hands. You could split the frame at times so you deal with left and right hand action separately.

Rent a disclavier... or go to a yamaha or other piano dealer and shoot there. Or find a hotel or music school or mall with one. Will save you much time and effort and get you exactly what you want.
