Film Festival Commercial

So I was asked on friday to shoot a promotional ad for the Ellensburg Film festival. It was rather last minute as the one they got from the local cable station ended up looking like a local car commercial, big surprise. Since I'm not living in Ellensburg any more, I have to get this to them asap, so I would appreciate any feedback you could give. I would like to know your thoughts on colors, mood, and if the "story" or reference makes any sense.
Thanks for your help

Hey, I'm glad that came through. Did everything make sense on the first viewing or did you have to view it a few times? Was there enough time to read the text at the end, even with the small web compression?

I love to see a .mov upload, I don't bother even watching anything on youtube any longer, I'm here to see great examples of dvx footage, and youtube butchers it (for obvious reasons, they get thousands of uploads per day). Even windows media player doesn't do it for me, the mac version licks. Oh, yeah, the video was cool too!

I loved it...short and to the point. I totally got the reference the first viewing. My short film is playing at the fest this year and I would've loved to have seen this in person (unfortunately I can't attend).

I'm assuming that the trailer will play before every screening? So remember, as people see more and more screenings, they're going to see this trailer over and over. And it will be most welcome that it's short.

Nice job. :)

Hey congrats in being in the festival. My wife and I are going to head over to Ellensburg for a couple days to see as many of the films as we can. Which one is yours? I look forward to seeing all the films this year, last year was great, and I'm sure this year will be even better.

Thanks. :) Glad you can make the fest. I'm bummed I can't b/c I went to U-Dub back in the day and had friends that went to Central. I remember going to The Gorge a few times to catch concerts...those were the days.

My film is HUBRIS. It's a short comedy centered around speed dating. Thanks for the support (in advance) if you do happen to catch it. I haven't been told about the screening time yet, but I'll try to remember to come back and post when I get the info.

Hope you enjoy the fest and the films. :)

Well, if it means anything to you...immediately after watching the clip I went to my web browser and typed in the address to the festival. I was intrigued and it was definitley clear what it was for on the first viewing.

Really enjoyed it, the look is great and I like the dark/bleach bypass look to the coloring. My favorite shot was the close up of the fingers pressing keys (great DOF there). The actor did a great job too, really drew me into what was going on.

Peace,
Larry

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it seems like everything makes sense :). I did use the letus for this, and did some scene file tweeking that I feel caused some excess noise, just trying something new and not liking it, but I was able to clean it up a bit, and the noise adds a little to the feeling I was looking for. As for lighting it was pretty simple, there is a 250W practical sitting in front of him, A 2K baby Gelled to 5600K and a Britek 1k at tungsten. I only had an hour to shoot this as I have been on set all weekend on another shoot, luckily I was able to use the same location for this one. The tape is now in the mail and should be airing later this week, for all of you who live in Ellensburg :) and possibly some surrounding areas.

The grain was actually a bit much for me when I shot it, I was experimenting with a low master ped and using Cinelike D. I have found that in daylight you can get some rather impressive results, but when you have a lower key shoot, not so impressive. I did do some grain replacement though, I don't like the look of straight camera noise, so I upsampled to 720P, used dynamic noise reduction, and then added a slight gaussian animated grain to the entire image. I then downsized the image to standard SD. I find that this adds an more uniform grain, and the grain is also much finer when added at 720P rather than 480P. All of these things are subject to what I am shooting however, and I rarely use the same color correction techniques and processes on each shoot. Hope that helps you out.

Interesting indeed. Looks more of a commercial made for a special event. Good that it didn't have a car commercial perspective.

Ok, now I have to ask you...How did you export it, and what settings did you use!? Im shooting with the XL2 and I still cant find a decent streaming export setting. Yours looked great!

Thanks, I'm hoping it's a bit better than a local car commercial. Invision, I used the h.264 quicktime setting at medium quality, default peramaters and a frame size of 444 x 240.
