Hello,

Reel Stream is now taking pre-orders for the DVX-100 based Andromeda system at our new website: http://www.reel-stream.com

The Andromeda system allows recording of 4:4:4 (Full RGB) Uncompressed digital video from your Panasonic DVX-100P/AP/B. Bypassing the in-camera processing, the Andromeda system utilizes the full 12-bit color precision available inside the camera, and yields additional dynamic range, particularly on the highlights. The dynamic range gains have been measured to yield a total of approximately 9.5 stops latitude, which is about a 2.5 stop improvement over the standard DV output.

A feature seen only on the highest-end systems, Andromeda allows the user to completely define the RGB curves(LUTs) for recording the uncompressed data directly from the camera's Analog-to-Digital converters.

The Andromeda system also records all active pixels, including areas of the CCD's normally cut-off by the internal camera processing, giving the user access to more pixels and a wider 1.85:1 image when the anamorphic adapter is used. By making use of the sub-pixel shift inherent in the 3CCD imager, the Andromeda system is capable of targetting uncompressed output frame sizes up to 1540x984 in 24P mode without up-rezzing.

We are currently taking pre-orders for our current first production batch, for January shipping. There are two pre-order configurations available:

1.)Andromeda system installation on an existing DVX-100P/AP/B.
2.)Andromeda system pre-installed on a new Panasonic DVX-100B.

Additional information is available at http://www.reel-stream.com
Please feel free to post any questions here or email directly to me Juan@reel-stream.com

Cheers,
Juan

I am definitly interested in this mod for the DVX but I am going wait for real world comments from customers to come back after you ship.

From the FAQ:

"Do you plan to support other cameras?
Yes. It is possible that the XL2(or one of the latest HD Camcorders) will be our next supported unit."

I understand the heightened color space 4:4:4 vs. 4:1:1 or HVX's 4:2:2. However, for a DVX to get Andromeda installed it will wind up being a $6500 dollar camera. This is a grand MORE than the HVX. Can anyone tell me why one would purchase the modded DVX with Andromeda BEFORE they would purchase the HVX?

And yes, I understand that many people are looking at it from the point of view, "I already have the DVX, instead of spending $5500.00 for a new HVX, I will purchase the Andromeda system for only 3K." But, if you HAVE 3K, why not just sell your cam too and get an HVX?

I am very confused about this pricepoint. Anyone care to elaborate? Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Rick

A grand more yes, but I think to some people 4:4:4 is worth it, You can uprez the image you capture to 1080p and bam 1080p 24p image with a 4:4:4 color space.

Well, you can't shoot 4:2:2 on the HVX straight out of the box (unless you record straight to a computer) So to say it's a grand more than an HVX which shoots 4:2:2 is kind of unfair. You need to get a Firestore, or at least a 4GB P2 card to shoot, so it's still less than an HVX shooting 4:2:2 (granted, not much less...but it is less).

What is the advantage?

No compression. None. That's HUGE.
Take a look at some of the stills on reel-stream's site, download them and take them into photoshop. Then grab a still off your DV footage and see how much more correction and manipulation the uncompressed image can take.

It is night and day.
Is it worth $3000?
Well, that's for each individual to decide.
