So to capture uncompressed I would pretty much need a massive harddrive.
pertierr said:In reality, not any more massive than drives you probably already own. However, the need for significant storage is going to be there with -any- uncompressed HD acquisition system. That's the whole point of not having compression there, the data size will be large but there is no decrease in quality whatsoever from what the camera really captures.
To illustrate, let me use as an example, my setup. I have an Apple Powerbook, with a tiny Hitachi 100GB external firewire drive. The drive is powered from the firewire cable itself, and is so small that I have it velcroed to the back of the powerbook screen. The setup is completely portable, battery powered, and serves as a hi-res digital monitor. Our software has integrated functions such as histogram, etc.
The 100GB drive stores about an hour of Uncompressed HD 24P footage. It also costs about $200 at most for 1 hour. Last time I checked, an 8 minute P2 card was $2,200 encoding highly compressed footage. The same concept applies, you can use each drive as a 'cartridge'. When full, you can swap it out for another one, and optionally offload them to a desktop while shooting. The difference is that for a few bucks you can easily get hundreds of Gigabytes for continous recording at uncompressed quality.
Cheers,
Juan
