And the journey begins...

Hey guys. Got my gear, and am now officially broke. What are some good, free alternatives to Barry Green's Book and DVD? I have no idea what I am doing with my DVX100b and would like to proceed slowly and cautiously.

HA!
NONE!
Honestly - getting Barry's book IS the cheap way.
Really.
These forums can help a ton. But Barry's book really is the "missing manual" for this camera.
I have mine with the camera at ALL times. And it's full of yellow highlighter.
I have re-read some sections as much as 10 times. And some sections you will only need when you get into more advanced stuff.

Sorry mate,
No way round it.

if you can't get the book right now, just play around with your camera.
sooner or later you will ask yourself..."what is this" or "why is this happing" so just search the forum and you should get your answears pretty quick.

I'm pretty sure you'll be fine without the book for now, but once you start doing the editing I got confused and needed some help....
good luck

One more thing you guys: as far as firewire cables, I have no knowledge. Will any one work for my dvx100b? Or do I need to look for something specific? My laptop has a lot of power and the port, so no problem there.

As long as the pins are right they all work. And the pins are standard.

I've never read Barry's book. I'm sure it's great, but I turned out just fine and learned everything I needed to know about the camera from online references, the manual, trail and error and past experience. If you don't have money, don't get it. You can learn on your own just fine. That's the real change the "digital revolution" has been bringing; that practice became cheap.

4 pin to 4 pin should firewire should give no probs. if ur laptop is 6 pin u have to be careful as many have blown there dvx firewire ports that way. I THINK if its 4 pin to 6 pin u should have the camera off, and plug in...or have both off and plug in. Someone correct me if i'm wrong i cant remember.

U can also use a cheap mini dv camcorder to capture ur footage as many of us do. I have a $200 canon zr900 which i use.

If it's a 6 pin, which is the normal size for firewire (desktops should all have these) make sure to plug the cord into the computer first, then into the camera. Laptops usually have 4 pin, which I think only goes in one way so it doesn't matter.

With the next semester coming up, time is very precious, so I'm sure I can find a family
member who will support the book purchase. My laptop is a 4 pin, but I'll still proceed with
caution. Like I said, I've spent my entire budget, so how bad would the wear on my dvx be if
I'm capturing to my laptop straight from it? 200 bucks isn't so bad, that's probably something
I'll do eventually. Thanks for the help guys!

the dvx has the 4pin so make that as your referance.
if you see the same slot on your laptop you need to get the 4pin to 4 pin firewire.
but if the firewire port looks bigger, then you need a 4pin to 6pin firewire.

you will be fine capturing with the dvx. it's no big deal.

if the lappy is 4 pin...then ur fine. 4 to 4 aint a prob. and capturing witht he dvx is fine...i used to b4 i got my capture cam.

honestly i say just read these forums... by the time i got the book i had pretty much read everything in it on here
